Introduction: Fibrotic interstitial lung diseases (ILD) are a heterogeneous group of conditions. Progression criteria include clinical, imaging, and/or lung functional decline. Currently, the 6-min walk test (6MWT) is considered the gold standard for assessing exercise-induced desaturation. The 1-min sit-to-stand test (1STST) has the advantage of being easy to perform, making it feasible for use during clinical consultations. The aim of this study was to compare the 1STST with the 6MWT in patients with fibrotic ILD to detect exercise-induced desaturation.

Methods: A multicenter cross-sectional involved patients with fibrotic ILDs from two centers. The 6MWT and 1STST were performed with a 30-min rest period between the tests. The modified Borg scale was used to assess dyspnea and lower limb fatigue and continuous SpO2 and heart rate were monitored. Desaturation was defined as SpO2 < 90 % or decline >3 %.

Results: Ninety patients were included. The median walking distance in the 6MWT was 432 m and the median number of repetitions in the 1STST was 22, with a significant correlation (p < 0.001, ρ = 0.383). In addition, the minimum SpO2 and the desaturation levels recorded during the tests exhibited a moderate significant correlation (p < 0.001, ρ = 0.502 and p < 0.001, ρ = 0.537, respectively). There was a strong association between the increase in Borg score for dyspnea and a moderate association between the increase in Borg score for lower limb fatigue after both tests (p < 0.001, ρ = 0.706 and p < 0.001, ρ = 0.656, respectively).

Conclusions: This study demonstrates a significant correlation between the 6MWT and the 1STST in detecting exercise-induced desaturation.

Introduction: Although it is established that individuals with obesity are at increased risk of cardiovascular events, the relationship between cardiovascular risk and physical function in this population is still a topic of discussion. The objectives of the present study were: to check the association between cardiovascular risk and physical performance through physical-functional tests and to identify cutoff points for functional tests to be used for the definition of high cardiovascular risk.

Methods: A cross-sectional study included adults, both sexes, with obesity.

Validation of Devices for the Five Times Sit To Stand Test: Comparing Plantar Pressure and Head Motion Analysis with Manual Measurement.

Yonsei Med J

January 2025

Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, Rehabilitation Institute of Neuromuscular Disease, Gangnam Severance Hospital, Yonsei University College of Medicine, Seoul, Korea.

Purpose: This study aims to evaluate a new method for the five times sit to stand test (FTSST), crucial for addressing frailty in an aging population. It utilizes a smart insole for plantar pressure analysis and a marker-less motion capture device for head height analysis.

Materials And Methods: Thirty-five participants aged 50 years or older underwent FTSST assessment using three methods: manual measurement with a stopwatch (FTSST-M), plantar pressure analysis with smart insoles (FTSST-P), and head height analysis with a marker-less motion capture device (FTSST-H).

Background: Frailty is a known determinant of poor clinical outcomes in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). However, prevalence estimates and effect sizes vary in part due to multiple tools available to measure frailty.

Objectives: This study aimed to compare the prevalence and prognostic value of six commonly used frailty assessments in adults with HFpEF.

Objective Interventions that reduce sitting time are easier to implement than those that aim to increase physical activity in compliance with the guidelines. There is no consensus on the association between sitting time as assessed by the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) and physical function. We investigated the association between self-reported sitting time and physical function according to the Kihon Checklist (KCL) among community-dwelling older adults.

Aim: The diagnosis of sarcopenia in patients on peritoneal dialysis (PD) in clinics is limited owing to its relatively complicated process and the need for expensive assessment equipment. This study aimed to develop and validate sex-specific nomogram models based on body mass index (BMI), handgrip strength, and other routine follow-up examination indicators to predict sarcopenia in patients on PD.

Methods: From March 2023 to February 2024, 699 eligible patients were recruited from the PD centers of two tertiary hospitals in southeastern China.
