Accessing an assisted death from the UK: Navigating the legal 'grey' area.

Death Stud

Published: October 2024

Assisted dying is available in many countries globally but remains illegal in the UK, where there are ongoing debates about its legal status. Britons seeking an assisted death must travel to Switzerland. This article explores the experiences of UK-based individuals considering an assisted death and family members of those who have completed an assisted death. We recruited 11 participants across two qualitative studies, analyzing data using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. These results indicated four themes: the "" of illness; the value of autonomy and control over death; the difficulties of talking about assisted dying; and the barriers associated with pursuing an assisted death. The findings suggest there are individuals in the UK who will seek an assisted death, despite its illegality. Those involved in these journeys are not currently able to access support and more needs to be done to ensure their needs are met.

Hijacking the hyaluronan assisted iron endocytosis to promote the ferroptosis in anticancer photodynamic therapy.

Carbohydr Polym

March 2025

State Key Laboratory of Complex Severe and Rare Diseases, Institute of Basic Medical Sciences, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College, Beijing 100005, PR China. Electronic address:

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) eradicates tumor cells by the light-stimulated reactive oxygen species, which also induces lipid peroxidation (LPO) and subsequently ferroptosis, an iron-depended cell death. Ferroptosis has a tremendous therapeutic potential in cancer treatment, however, the ferroptosis efficiency is largely limited by the available iron in cells. Through hijacking the CD44-mediated iron endocytosis of hyaluronan (HA), here PDT with enhanced ferroptosis was realized by a HA@Ce6 nanogel self-assembled from HA, a photosensitizer Chlorin e6 (Ce6) and Fe as cross-linkers.

Multiple Biomarkers to Predict Major Adverse Cardiovascular Events in Patients With Coronary Chronic Total Occlusions.

Am J Cardiol

January 2025

Cardiology Division, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, MA, USA; Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, USA; Baim Institute for Clinical Research, Boston, MA, USA. Electronic address:

There are limited tools available to predict the long-term prognosis of persons with coronary chronic total occlusions (CTO). A previously-described blood biomarker panel to predict cardiovascular (CV) events was evaluated in patients with CTO. From 1251 patients in the CASABLANCA study, 241 participants with a CTO were followed for an average of 4 years for occurrence of major adverse CV events (MACE, CV death, non-fatal myocardial infarction or stroke) and CV death/heart failure (HF) hospitalization.

In response to increased focus on the issue of Assisted Dying (AD) in the UK due to the presentation of The Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill 2024-25 [1] and bills before parliaments in the Isle of Man, Guernsey and Scotland, the British Geriatric Society (BGS) recently developed a position statement opposing legalisation of AD in the UK [2]. We set out our key reasoning behind this position, namely the current adverse health and social care context and significant concern about whether effective safeguards can be created to protect older people with complex needs from undue harms. The BGS asks for improved, personalised, multidisciplinary care for older people at the end of their lives, including high-quality palliative and end-of-life care.
