Herbal drugs in chronic venous disease treatment: An update. | LitMetric

AI Article Synopsis

  • * The review examines the role of certain medicinal plants, like Ruscus aculeatus, Aesculus hippocastanum, and Centella asiatica, highlighting their active compounds and potential therapeutic benefits for CVD.
  • * It covers the latest insights on CVD's causes, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment options, focusing on the effectiveness, safety, and chemical properties of plant-based medications.

Article Abstract

The prevalence of chronic venous disease (CVD) is relatively high, it affects 20-80 % of the population worldwide. CVD may affect any veins in the human body, however, the veins of the lower extremities are the most susceptible to this condition. Among therapeutic possibilities for CVD, mainly chronic venous insufficiency, some medicinal plants (Ruscus aculeatus L., Aesculus hippocastanum L., Centella asiatica (L.) Urb.) and their active compounds (ruscoside, aescin, asiaticoside) or close derivatives also have important places. This review describes shortly the updated knowledge on pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, evaluation, and diagnostics of CVD as well as treatment modalities. The primary focus of this review is on the existing knowledge about botanical medications for treating chronic venous disease (CVD). It covers the chemical makeup of these plant drugs, their pharmacological effects, results from clinical trials involving humans, and any associated safety concerns.

Aim: Varicose veins, while frequently perceived as a cosmetic concern, should be evaluated within the broader context of chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) affecting the lower extremities. The Mappa Emodinamica Venosa Condivisa, Italian for Shared Venous Hemodynamics Map (MEVeC) project aims to provide an objective method for assessing the hemodynamic disorders underlying CVI and standardizing the evaluation of therapeutic interventions for lower extremity CVI. To achieve objective treatment assessment, it is essential to ensure uniform expertise among phlebologists and the ability to replicate comparable clinical outcomes.

Beyond The Basics: Unveiling Superior Vena Cava Compression in Hodgkin's Lymphoma.

Cureus

November 2024

Internal Medicine/Pulmonary Critical Care, Appalachian Regional Healthcare, Harlan, USA.

Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL) is a malignancy of the lymphocytes in the lymph nodes and presents with non-specific systemic symptoms like fever, night sweats, and weight loss. While HL often involves the mediastinum, it rarely causes superior vena cava (SVC) syndrome, and eosinophilia is noted in approximately 15% of cases. Here, we report a unique presentation of HL in a 52-year-old male with a history of chronic pruritus, chronic kidney disease, and inactive hepatitis B.

Chronic venous disease has a major impact on the quality of life of millions of patients. Large randomized controlled trials have established ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy (UGFS) as a safe and effective treatment option for both saphenous vein insufficiency and tributary disease. Ultrasound guidance is a critical component of sclerotherapy of non-visible veins.

[VEXAS-like auto inflammatory syndrome: 2 cases].

Rev Med Interne

December 2024

Service de médecine interne, CHI Poissy-St Germain, 10, rue du Champs Gaillard, 78300 Poissy, France.

Introduction: VEXAS syndrome (vacuoles, E1 enzyme, X-linked, autoinflammatory, somatic), recently described, due to a somatic mutation of the UBA1 gene and often associated with hemopathy, is characterized by systemic symptoms close to those described in Still's disease or relapsing polychondritis. There are also patients with hemopathy, presenting inflammatory symptoms reminiscent of those of VEXAS syndrome but without mutation of the UBA1 gene.

Case/discussion: Two male patients consulted for general signs, dermatological symptoms, arthralgia, chondritis and venous thrombosis, like patients in the French cohort suffering from VEXAS syndrome.

Real-world data are a highly valuable resource in determining the efficacy of novel products in challenging populations, especially in wound care. This study retrospectively analyzed the real-world performance of porcine placental extracellular matrix (PPECM; InnovaMatrix® AC, Convatec Triad Life Sciences, LLC, Memphis, TN, USA), a novel cellular, acellular, and matrix-like product for the management of hard-to-heal wounds. The US Wound Registry (USWR), which comprises aggregated and structured electronic health records from 502 wound practices, provided a deidentified dataset collected from October 10, 2022 to March 25, 2024, containing 76,278 patients (248,278 wounds).
