Health restoration and disease prevention are important strategies to achieve health and well-being. This provides a conceptual overview of the key concepts of salutogenesis (health restoration), chronic stress, resilience, and emotional well-being, and describes how they are distinct and interrelated. We posit, and demonstrate through scientific evidence, that complementary and integrative health approaches, including mind and body interventions, can be used to mitigate the effects of chronic stress and promote salutogenic pathways. Our goal is to identify research gaps and opportunities and suggest ways to advance the knowledge base for mechanistic and clinical research in this field.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores how sense of coherence (SoC), a key factor in health promotion, is influenced by psycho-oncological care (PC) focusing on tension management.
  • Researchers surveyed 100 patients at two different time points to assess their care experiences, therapeutic alliance, and SoC.
  • Results indicated that a strong therapeutic bond and the number of consultations positively impacted patients' overall SoC and its subdimensions, emphasizing the importance of quality and frequency of care in effective tension management.

We examined whether the salutogenic nature of resilience is the pathway of association, as well as a moderating factor, between spirituality and vicarious posttraumatic growth (VPTG). Two hundred Nigerian orthopedic nurses completed the Resilience Scale (RS-14), Spiritual Involvement and Belief Scale-Revised (SIBS-R), and Posttraumatic Growth Inventory-Short Form (PTGI-SF). We found that greater spirituality and resilience were directly associated with high VPTG.

With the trend towards ageing population globally, the salutogenic model can be integrated in interventions for pre-ageing and older adults to better support healthy ageing. However, there is limited research examining the salutogenic model's pathway amongst pre-ageing and older adults. Hence, this study aims to investigate pathways of the salutogenic model amongst pre-ageing and older adults with chronic diseases.
