Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as promising candidates for enzyme mimics due to their abundant pore structures and adjustable active sites. The catalytic activity particularly depends on the electronic character of the organic ligand. In this study, we report an iron-based MOF nanozyme FeTDC, created by replacing the 1,4-dicarboxybenzene ligand with five-membered 2,5-thiophenedicarboxylic acid (HTDC). In comparison with the phenyl analogue, the sulfur-based heterocyclic ligand demonstrates high electron delocalization, and a low pKa value, which are beneficial for enhancing the metal/ligand interactions. Accordingly, FeTDC can facilitate the oxidation of the benzidine substrate in the presence of HO, thereby exhibiting remarkable peroxidase-like activity. The generation of hydroxyl radical (•OH) at the Fe active sites contributes to the catalytic process. Furthermore, the smartphone-assisted colorimetric assay of pyrophosphate was developed with high sensitivity, based on its inhibitory effect. When FeTDC was utilized for the removal of benzidine dye under high-salt condition, a 90 % of removal rate was achieved due to the synergistic effect of enzyme catalysis and physical adsorption. This work presents a novel perspective of heterocyclic effect on the design of MOF nanozymes, thereby expanding their applicability in the control of pollutants.

Catalytically active nanomaterials, or nanozymes, have gained significant attention as alternatives to natural enzymes due to their low cost, ease of preparation, and enhanced stability. Because of easy preparation, excellent biocompatibility, and unique optoelectronic properties, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have attracted increasing attention in many fields, including nanozymes. In this work, we demonstrated the applicability of beta-cyclodextrin functionalized gold nanoparticles (β-CD-AuNPs) as enzyme mimics for different substances, including TMB and DA.

A highly sensitive and selective electrochemical biosensor was developed for the detection of kanamycin using a core-hollow-shell structured peroxidase-mimic nanozyme, CHS-Fe₃O₄@@ZIF-8. The synthesized CHS-FeO@@ZIF-8 was characterized with scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It was found that the CHS-FeO@@ZIF-8 exhibits excellent peroxidase-like activity due to its ultra-thin hollow layer.

In this work, a peroxidase-like (POD-like) nanozyme of Fe/P-NC was synthesized by doping phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) to manipulate iron (Fe) activity centers, which showed catalytic activity and kinetics comparable to those of natural HRP. Based on the efficient POD-like activity of the Fe/P-NC nanozyme and cascaded catalytic reactions with acetylcholinesterase (AChE), we constructed a colorimetric, affordable and sensitive sensing platform to detect organophosphorus pesticides (OPs). In the presence of AChE, the POD-like activity of the prepared Fe/P-NC was suppressed, which weakened the Fe/P-NC-catalyzed oxidation of TMB.

The overuse of antibiotics has led to the severe contamination of water bodies, posing a considerable hazard to human health. Therefore, the development of an accurate and rapid point-of-care testing (POCT) platform for the quantitative detection of antibiotics is necessary. In this study, Cerium oxide (CeO) and Ferrosoferric oxide (FeO) nanoparticles were simultaneously encapsulated into N-doped nanofibrous carbon microspheres to form of a novel nanozyme (CeFe-NCMzyme) with a porous structure, high surface area, and N-doped carbon material properties, leading to a considerable enhancement of the peroxidase (POD)-like activity compared with that of the CeO or FeO nanoparticles alone.

Natural enzymes are a class of biological catalysts that can catalyze a specific substrate. Although natural enzymes have catalytic activity, they are susceptible to the influence of external environment such as temperature, and storage requirements are more stringent. Since the first discovery of magnetic FeO nanoparticles with peroxidase-like activity in 2007, the research on nanoenzymes has entered a rapid development stage.
