Published: November 2024

Membrane lipid composition is maintained by conserved lipid transfer proteins, but computational approaches to study their lipid-binding mechanisms are limiting. Srinivasan et al. (https://doi.org/10.1083/jcb.202312055) develop a clever molecular dynamics simulations assay to accurately model lipid-binding poses in lipid transfer proteins.

The emergence of antibiotic-resistant () is a pressing threat in clinical settings. Colistin is currently a widely used treatment for multidrug-resistant , serving as the last line of defense. However, reports of colistin-resistant strains of have emerged, underscoring the urgent need to develop alternative medications to combat these serious pathogens.

CX3CR1-transduced regulatory T cells (Tregs) have shown potential in reducing neuroinflammation by targeting microglial activation. Reactive microglia are implicated in neurological disorders, and CX3CR1-CX3CL1 signaling modulates microglial activity. The ability of CX3CR1-transduced Tregs to inhibit LPS-induced neuroinflammation was assessed in animal models.

Non-specific Lipid Transfer proteins (nsLTPs) are relevant allergens of several pollens and plant foods. Sensitization to nsLTPs is not typical in our region. Still, it has become an increasingly common cause of IgE-mediated food allergies and food-induced anaphylaxis in Northern Europe in recent decades.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains a leading global health concern, with atherosclerosis being its principal cause. Standard CVD treatments primarily focus on mitigating cardiovascular (CV) risk factors through lifestyle changes and cholesterol-lowering therapies. As atherosclerosis is marked by chronic arterial inflammation, the innate and adaptive immune systems play vital roles in its progression, either exacerbating or alleviating disease development.

Due to their high biocompatibility, biodegradability, and facile surface functionalization, phospholipid vesicles as carriers have garnered significant attention in the realm of disease diagnosis and treatment. On the one hand, phospholipid vesicles can function as probes for the detection of various diseases by encapsulating nanoparticles, thereby enabling the precise localization of pathological changes and the monitoring of disease progression. On the other hand, phospholipid vesicles possess the capability to selectively target and deliver therapeutic agents, including drug molecules, genes and immune modulators, to affected sites, thereby enhancing the sustained release of these agents and improving therapeutic efficacy.
