Microplastic pollution poses a significant environmental threat due to its persistence, widespread distribution, and inherent toxic potential. Despite the increasing number of publications in this field, a standardized protocol for the laboratory intake of microplastics by has yet to be established. In this study, we introduce a verified protocol designed to facilitate the ingestion of microplastic particles (MPs) by , ranging in size from 5-55 µm. This protocol can be further applied to evaluate the toxicity of MPs on , a crucial organism model in ecotoxicology. Furthermore, this protocol can be used to assess toxicity of MPs in other aquatic species, such as fish, by using daphnids as a vehicle for ensuring the ingestion of these particles. Consequently, this protocol can be applied to study also one of the most pressing concerns regarding exposure to MPs, the transfer of MPs through different trophic levels, which has a great potential for ecotoxicological studies.•The influence of MPs concentration, duration and exposure dynamics and age/size in MPs intake were tested.•We have determined the optimal conditions for promoting microplastic ingestion by .

Background And Objectives: Microplastics, which originate from the breakdown of larger plastic fragments or are intentionally produced for industrial applications, pose significant human and ecological risks through inhalation, ingestion, and dermal contact. Our study examined the release of microplastics during the preparation of homemade saline solutions, specifically when tearing open powder packets and mixing the powder with water.
Methods: We used commercially available polypropylene nasal irrigation bottles from the Korean market and collected six samples of nasal irrigation fluids.

Micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) are widespread in the environment and food, posing ingestion risks through various pathways. However, their transformation in human body fluids (SBFs), especially the formation of secondary nanoparticles (NPs), is not well understood due to inadequate quantification methods. This study proposed a robust method for quantifying eight common MNPs using pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) for pretreatment and pyrolysis gas chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (Py-GC-QTOF-MS) for analysis.

Microplastics (MPs) contamination in human food is a growing concern due to potential health risks. Recent studies have indicated that MPs have been found in various human tissues and organs, including the placenta, lungs, liver, and blood. This highlights the importance of investigating the presence and concentration of MPs in food products, as it directly relates to human health and safety.

The occurrence of chemical effluents in different water bodies is an emerging concern. However, the effect of laboratory effluents on the canal ecosystem in Bangladesh is largely unknown. In this study, we collected 10 components of the canal ecosystem including sediments, water, fish, crabs, snails, phytoplanktons, and weeds specifically from canals that directly receive laboratory effluents.

The potential health risks of microplastics (MPs) and their combined exposure with heavy metals such as mercury (Hg) in aquatic environment are increasingly concerned recently. In this work, zebrafish embryos were exposed to different levels of polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs, ∼0.1 μm) coupled with Hg(II) or/and MeHg at 20 μg/L, to investigate the tissue biodistribution and accumulation of PS-MPs and Hg species, and their interaction, as well as embryo toxicity, oxidative stress and metabolic profiles.
