Article Abstract

In this Letter, we investigate the fate of the non-Hermitian skin effect in one-dimensional systems that conserve the dipole moment and higher moments of an associated global U(1) charge. Motivated by field theoretical arguments and lattice model calculations, we demonstrate that the key feature of the non-Hermitian skin effect for m-pole conserving systems is the generation of an (m+1)th multipole moment. For example, in contrast to the conventional skin effect where charges are anomalously localized at one boundary, the dipole-conserving skin effect results in charges localized at both boundaries, in a configuration that generates an extremal quadrupole moment. In addition, we explore the dynamical consequences of the m-pole skin effect, focusing on charge and entanglement propagation. Both numerically and analytically, we provide evidence that long-time steady states have Fock-space localization and an area-law scaling of entanglement entropy, which serve as quantum indicators of the skin effect.

Enhancing the skin effect in non-Hermitian photonic crystals has traditionally required alternating materials with different gain and loss characteristics inside the basic unit, which not only increases fabrication complexity but also faces limitations due to different material compatibility and material integrations. In this paper, a novel method is proposed that requires only one material but enables significant enhancement of the skin effect intensity by introducing spatial rotational symmetry breaking in two-dimensional reciprocal photonic crystals. Our result has shown a 306.

In contrast with extended Bloch waves, a single particle can become spatially localized due to the so-called skin effect originating from non-Hermitian pumping. Here we show that in kinetically constrained many-body systems, the skin effect can instead manifest as dynamical amplification within the Fock space, beyond the intuitively expected and previously studied particle localization and clustering. We exemplify this non-Hermitian Fock skin effect in an asymmetric version of the PXP model and show that it gives rise to ergodicity-breaking eigenstates-the non-Hermitian analogs of quantum many-body scars.

The high sensitivity of the spectrum and wave functions to boundary conditions, termed the non-Hermitian skin effect, represents a fundamental aspect of non-Hermitian systems. While it endows non-Hermitian systems with unprecedented physical properties, it presents notable obstacles in grasping universal properties that are robust against microscopic details and boundary conditions. In this Letter, we introduce a pivotal theorem: in the thermodynamic limit, for any non-Hermitian systems with finite-range interactions, all spectral moments are invariant quantities, independent of boundary conditions, posing strong constraints on the spectrum.

We examine the applicability of the numerically accurate method of time dependent variation with multiple Davydov Ansätze (mDA) to non-Hermitian systems. As illustrative examples, three systems of interest have been studied, a non-Hermitian system of dissipative Landau-Zener transitions, a non-Hermitian multimode Jaynes-Cummings model, and a dissipative Holstein-Tavis-Cummings model, all of which are shown to be effectively described by the mDA method. Our findings highlight the versatility of the mDA as a powerful numerical tool for investigating complex many-body non-Hermitian systems, which can be extended to explore diverse phenomena such as skin effects, excited-state dynamics, and spectral topology in the non-Hermitian field.

Non-Hermitian Global Synchronization.

Adv Sci (Weinh)

November 2024

Key Laboratory of Advanced Optoelectronic Quantum Architecture and Measurements of Ministry of Education, Beijing Key Laboratory of Nanophotonics and Ultrafine Optoelectronic Systems, School of Physics, Beijing Institute of Technology, Beijing, 100081, China.

Synchronization of coupled nonlinear oscillators is a prevalent phenomenon in natural systems and can play important roles in various fields of modern science, such as laser arrays and electric networks. However, achieving robust global synchronization has always been a significant challenge due to its extreme susceptibility to initial conditions and structural perturbations. Here, a novel approach is presented to achieve robust global synchronization by manipulating the interplay between non-Hermitian physics and nonlinear dynamics.
