AI Article Synopsis

  • A 34-year-old man experienced worsening foot pain that initially affected soft tissue but later focused on the midfoot's medial side, remaining undiagnosed for two years despite tests and treatments.
  • After noticing soft tissue and bone changes in the medial cuneiform, a needle biopsy failed to provide clear results.
  • A 99mTc-MDP bone scan suggested osteoid osteoma, which was confirmed after surgery revealed an intraarticular nidus beneath the tibialis anterior tendon.

Article Abstract

A 34-year-old man presented with progressive foot pain that was initially on the medial soft tissue but eventually localized to the medial side of midfoot. Despite undergoing various imaging tests and conservative treatments over 2 years, the patient remained undiagnosed. After 6 months, soft tissue and bone involvement were observed on the medial cuneiform. A needle biopsy was inconclusive. Since bone tumor is rare in the medial cuneiform, the patient was referred to our department for 99m Tc-MDP bone scan. The imaging and clinical findings suggested osteoid osteoma as the likely diagnosis, which was confirmed as intraarticular nidus under tibialis anterior attachment, after surgical resection and pathological examination.

The External Globus Pallidus as the Hub of the Auditory Cortico-Basal Ganglia Loop.

The cortico-basal ganglia loop has traditionally been conceptualized as consisting of three distinct information networks: motor, limbic, and associative. However, this three-loop concept is insufficient to comprehensively explain the diverse functions of the cortico-basal ganglia system, as emerging evidence suggests its involvement in sensory processing, including the auditory systems. In the present study, we demonstrate the auditory cortico-basal ganglia loop by using transgenic mice and viral-assisted labelings.

A recommended sampling strategy for genetic identification of Second World War victims in Slovenia.

Institute of Forensic Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Ljubljana, Korytkova 2, Ljubljana 1000, Slovenia. Electronic address:

Skeletonized human remains from Second World War mass graves in Slovenia are a major challenge in genetic identification, and bones with a high DNA yield must be selected for successful identification. The goal of this study was to construct skeletal sampling strategy recommendations through comparison of the most appropriate groups of skeletal elements. Altogether, 566 bones and teeth from the same mass grave were compared, half analyzed in this study and half in previous studies performed by our group.

Naviculocuneiform (NC) arthrodesis is considered a challenging procedure compared to arthrodesis of other medial column joints and/or hindfoot fusions. The objectives of this study were to 1) report the incidence of nonunion and complications after NC arthrodesis with or without adjunct joint arthrodesis, and 2) report incidences in which a fixation method was used and report how many cuneiform joints were fused. A retrospective review of medical charts and radiographs were performed on patients from 1/2013 through 11/2023 at a single institution in the Midwest region.
