AI Article Synopsis

  • The New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner (NYC OCME) investigates around 9,000-10,000 deaths annually, with a focus on formal identification processes.
  • While most cases are resolved using standard protocols, there are still many long-term unidentified persons that require in-depth investigations combining both postmortem and antemortem data.
  • Over the past seven years, NYC OCME has successfully identified over 80 long-term unidentified persons by employing a flexible yet systematic approach, showcasing effective investigative strategies that could benefit other jurisdictions facing similar challenges.

Article Abstract

Unlabelled: The New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner (NYC OCME) investigates approximately 9 000-10 000 deaths every year, each of which necessitates a formal identification. Although standard identification protocols resolve the majority of these cases, there are still a substantial number of long-term unidentified persons cases that require a targeted investigation. This process involves not only the comprehensive review of all available postmortem data (e.g. scene findings, personal effects, autopsy findings, toxicology results, forensic anthropology reports, dental findings, fingerprints, forensic biology), but also the collection of antemortem data through focused informant interviews, analyzing casefiles and/or archival records, reviewing public missing person postings (e.g. National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs)), and collaborating with law enforcement and other agencies. This holistic approach to identification investigations is systematic yet flexible, allowing for the needs of each unidentified person and/or missing person case to be thoroughly assessed and efficiently addressed. These efforts have proven successful at NYC OCME, resulting in over 80 long-term unidentified persons identifications confirmed in the last 7 years, dating as far back as 1969. This paper provides a detailed breakdown of the NYC OCME framework for long-term unidentified persons investigations, citing multiple case studies to underscore how investigators utilize multiple lines of evidence to generate potential leads. Although each jurisdiction faces a unique set of demands and limitations, sharing these investigative strategies and perspectives may benefit practitioners contending with long-term unidentified persons cases and their inherent complexities.

Key Points: The NYC OCME oversees a large caseload of unidentified persons yet achieves a high rate of case resolution by applying a systematic and holistic investigation that involves a comprehensive review of postmortem data and the collection of antemortem data specific to a forensic identification.Analyzing multiple lines of postmortem biological and contextual evidence allows practitioners to hypothesize possible socioeconomic, cultural, and religious social identities that can be used to generate identification leads and inform comparisons to missing persons.Gathering as much detailed, accurate, and comprehensive antemortem data for a missing person is equally important when performing an identification comparison to a long-term unidentified persons (UP) and can better inform archival morgue records searches.

Background: Developing analytical methods for Traditional Medicine products by liquid chromatography is challenging due to their chemical complexity and the lack of analytical standards for numerous, unidentified constituents. Regulatory agencies recommend chromatographic fingerprint analysis for quality evaluation, relying on peak detection to ensure resolution. Conventional modelling struggles to optimise experimental conditions for such complex samples.

Background: It is largely unidentified concerning the underlying genetic causes responsible for triple-negative breast cancers (TNBC), with unpredictable disease recurrence. This study aimed to examine the role of ZNF703 (Zinc finger 703) in the malignant behaviors of TNBC and its role in predicting disease-free survival (DFS).

Methods: After downregulation of ZNF703 with short interfering RNA (siRNA), we examined the proliferation of TNBC cell line MDA-MB-231 by sulforhodamine B (SRB) assay, the invasion of cells by a transwell invasion model, and the migration of cells by the monolayer wound-healing experiment.

Alternative fuels are urgently needed to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. This study was conducted to recover bioenergy from non-edible feedstock, an oleaginous yeast biomass obtained during fed-batch cultivation of Yarrowia lipolytica. Yeast oil (lipids) was extracted from the harvested biomass and readily converted into biodiesel using the non-catalytic transesterification method.

Background: The benefits of improving coverage and timeliness of varicella vaccination need to be quantified in countries where varicella vaccine (VarV) has not yet been included in national immunization programs. This longitudinal study analyzed the vaccine effectiveness (VE) of the varicella vaccination program implemented in Changzhou City during the transitional period (2017-2022).

Methods: Using the Immunization Information System and National Notifiable Infectious Disease Surveillance System registry data, this retrospective case-cohort study assessed the VEs of varicella vaccination for Changzhou children born from 2016 to 2021.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have gained significant global attention due to their extensive industrial use and harmful effects on various organisms. Among these, perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) are well-studied, but their diverse precursors remain challenging to monitor. The Total Oxidizable Precursor (TOP) assay offers a powerful approach to converting these precursors into detectable PFAAs.
