AI Article Synopsis

  • A 60-year-old male with bilateral lower limb amputations experienced a fracture in his right residual femur after using his prosthetic leg during therapy, linked to his high body mass index in the morbidly obese range.
  • The patient was referred for orthopedic care and assessed by a multidisciplinary team for prosthetic rehabilitation after recovering from the fracture.
  • The patient was found unsuitable for further prosthetic use and referred to a national weight management service, emphasizing the need for early weight management to improve outcomes for amputees.

Article Abstract

Presentation: We report a case of a 60-year-old male with bilateral lower limb amputations who sustained a fracture to his right residual femur after weight bearing on his prosthetic leg during therapy. This was attributed to his raised body mass index that fell in the morbidly obese category.

Diagnosis: Patient was referred for orthopaedic management and reviewed by the multidisciplinary prosthetic rehabilitation team following the fracture recovery.

Treatment: He was deemed unsuitable for further prosthetic usage and ultimately referred to the national weight management service and the bariatric team.

Discussion: Fracture of the residual limb in an amputee is not a common occurrence. There is a scarcity of information regarding fractures in an amputation stump of obese individuals. This is an unusual case which highlights the significance of body weight on lower limb prosthetic usage, impact on rehabilitation and the need to address weight management at an earlier stage post amputations.

[Treatment with TOPS for short femoral stump].

Oper Orthop Traumatol

Klinik für Unfall‑, Hand und Wiederherstellungschirurgie, Universitätsmedizin Rostock, Schillingallee 35, 18057, Rostock, Deutschland.

Objective: Treatment with transcutaneous osseointegrated prosthesis systems (TOPS) for short femoral amputation stumps aims to restore independent walking ability after proximal femoral amputation by direct bone-guided prosthesis anchorage. This cannot be safely achieved with conventional socket prostheses due to the mechanically inadequate socket contact surface.

Indications: Treatment of patients with short transfemoral stumps who cannot be mobilized sufficiently with conventional socket prostheses.

Background: Major amputations are a standard procedure being done for various etiologies of the lower limb. Surgical site infections often complicate the postoperative outcome of patients. Negative pressure wound therapy has evolved to have a preventive role in SSI.

Objective: To determine the strength of the association between residual limb neuropathic pain intensity and the number of neuromas, prosthetic, functional, and participation outcomes, and assess whether ultrasound (US) biomarkers of neuromas differ between pain intensities.

Design: Cross-sectional study.

Subjects: Twenty-two participants with a transtibial amputation for more than 12 months, with and without residual limb neuropathic pain.

Objective: The integrity of the plantar flap is important for transmetatarsal amputation (TMA) classic closure. However, in ischemic wounds, the plantar flap can be compromised, making the TMA coverage difficult. The aim of this study was to compare the outcomes of rotational vs long plantar flaps for transmetatarsal amputation closure in patients with dysvascular partial foot amputations.

Penile amputation following circumcision is a rare but serious complication. Reconstructing the glans poses a complex surgical challenge, and several techniques have been proposed to address this issue. We present the case of a 10-year-old boy who experienced complete glans amputation 14 hours after circumcision.
