AI Article Synopsis

  • A newborn girl was referred for assessment of a large pigmented lesion on her lower back, accompanied by several smaller lesions.
  • Two biopsies revealed characteristics of a congenital nevus, along with some unique spindled dendritic cells that did not show signs of melanocyte positivity.
  • The findings indicate the presence of a congenital nevus with features similar to a neurocristic hamartoma, emphasizing the rarity of this condition and the need for early diagnosis and monitoring.

Article Abstract

We present the case of a newborn female that was referred for review of a large melanocytic lesion on the lower back and multiple smaller lesions. Two biopsies were taken which showed features of congenital naevus and a small component of spindled dendritic cells that showed no positivity with melanocytic markers. As such, the histopathological findings of these biopsies were consistent with a diagnosis of a congenital naevus with areas resembling a neurocristic hamartoma. This case serves to highlight this rare condition and its clinical presentation, histopathological features and the importance of its early diagnosis and surveillance.

Background: Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma is a rare vascular tumor primarily occurring in infants and children. The most common sites for kaposiform hemangioendothelioma are extremities, with very few cases of abdominal kaposiform hemangioendothelioma reported in neonates. Making a diagnosis of Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma can be challenging when the patient presents with generalized symptoms such as bilious vomiting and constipation that can be attributed to other more common causes of intestinal obstruction.

Adverse birth outcome research case definitions associated with maternal HIV and antiretroviral drug use in pregnancy: a scoping review.

BMC Pregnancy Childbirth

December 2024

Department of Paediatrics & Child Health, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Stellenbosch University, Cape Town, South Africa.

Background: Adverse birth outcomes (preterm birth, low birth weight, small for gestational age, and stillbirth) seem to persist in infants born to people with HIV, even in the context of maternal antiretroviral therapy. However, findings have been disparate, inconclusive, and difficult to compare directly across settings, partly owing to variable outcome definitions. We aimed to collate, compare, and map existing adverse birth outcome definitions to inform a harmonized approach to universally measure these outcomes in studies including pregnant people with HIV.

Extraventricular neurocytoma (EVN) is a rare neuronal tumor with a marked tendency towards ganglionic or glial differentiation. Although EVN commonly occurs in young adults, congenital cases are extremely rare, and standardized therapeutic strategies remain undetermined. The presence of atypical features such as increased mitotic activity on histological analysis is correlated with a higher rate of recurrence and poor prognosis.
