The extreme electric fields created in high-intensity laser-plasma interactions could generate energetic ions far more compactly than traditional accelerators. Despite this promise, laser-plasma accelerator experiments have been limited to maximum ion energies of ∼100  MeV/nucleon. The central challenge is the low charge-to-mass ratio of ions, which has precluded one of the most successful approaches used for electrons: laser wakefield acceleration.

We demonstrate a versatile THz waveguide platform for tailored THz-induced orientation and alignment of gas molecules. The underlying waveguide structure is dispersionless, with a refractive index close to one, and enhances the electric as well as the magnetic field up to a factor of five. These properties increase the detected transient birefringence signal by more than an order of magnitude compared to conventional THz free space focusing.

Electric-field oscillations are now experimentally accessible in the THz-to-PHz frequency range. Their measurement delivers the most comprehensive information content attainable by optical spectroscopy - if performed with high sensitivity. The latest extremity photon-counting computed tomography (PCCT) scanner leverages these advantages for tissue characterization, material decomposition, beam hardening correction, and metal artifact reduction. However, technical challenges such as charge splitting and pulse pileup can distort the energy spectrum and compromise image quality.
