Anaerobic/Aerobic/Anoxic (AOA) process utilizes endogenous denitrification to remove nitrogen. However, low endogenous denitrification activity critically restricts its application owing to insufficient carbon sources. In this study, a novel control strategy employing anaerobic/aerobic/anoxic/aerobic/anoxic (AOAOA) mode was introduced to treat low Carbon/Nitrogen (C/N) ratio municipal wastewater over 262 days. The concentration of total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) was only 3.9 ± 2.0 mg/L in the effluent, with a high nitrogen removal efficiency (NRE) of 94.3 %. The relative abundance of Candidatus Competibacter increased from 1.2 % to 2.3 %, ensuring an efficient endogenous denitrification process. Additionally, Candidatus Brocadia enriched from 0.02 % to 0.6 %, contributing to 63.1 % nitrogen removal during the anoxic stage in Phase Ⅲ. This study presents a promising approach for enhancing endogenous denitrification and anammox in the AOA process, contributing to sustainable wastewater treatment.

Hydroxylamine (HA) dosing is an effective strategy for promoting partial nitrification (PN); however, its impact on endogenous denitrification remains underexplored. In this study, long-term continuous HA dosing (1.4 mg/L) was introduced for over 110 days in a pilot-scale anaerobic/aerobic/anoxic (AOA) system treating municipal wastewater (66.

Excessive organic matter in the anaerobic ammonia oxidation (Anammox) leads to the growth of a large number of heterotrophic bacteria, which disrupts the anaerobic ammonia oxidation. The adsorption-anaerobic ammonia oxidation process can effectively reduce excessive organic matter, capturing it instead of consuming it, which is a sustainable development technology. In this study, utilizing the excellent adsorption performance of aerobic granular sludge (AGS), an adsorption-regeneration process was employed to remove organic matter at the front end of the Anammox process through bio-adsorption in an artificial simulated domestic sewage environment, and it was successfully used for denitrification.

The environmental risk of microplastics (MPs) in aerobic granular sludge (AGS) system is unclear. This study evaluates the effects of non-biodegradable polyvinyl chloride microplastics (PVC-MPs) and biodegradable polylactic acid microplastics (PLA-MPs) on AGS systems. The results showed that both destroyed the performance of AGS systems, with PVC-MPs achieving this by disrupting the AGS structure, while PLA-MPs mainly by causing the expansion of filamentous bacteria induced through the stimulation by lactic acid metabolite (R0: 5.

The effective production of NO-N through endogenous partial denitrification (EPD) provides a promising perspective for the broader adoption and application of anaerobic ammonia oxidation. However, the accumulation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the environment may worsen the operational challenges of the EPD system. This study evaluated the resilience of the EPD system to the toxic impacts of phenanthrene (PHE) and anthracene (ANT) through macrogenomic analysis.

Endogenous partial denitrification (EPD) offered a promising pathway for supplying nitrite to anammox, and it also enabled energy-efficient and cost-effective nitrogen removal. However, information about the impact of different carbon sources on the EPD system was limited, and the metabolic mechanisms remained unclear. This study operated the EPD system for 180 days with various acetate and propionate ratios over eight phases.
