Rheumatic mitral stenosis is a common rheumatic heart diseases in sub-Saharan Afrleading to increased morbidity and mortality. Percutaneous mitral balloon valvuloplasty is the mainstay of less invasive therapy in those with moderate to severe valve stenosis, being symptomatic despite optimal medical therapy. Though generally save with experienced hand and setup, post procedural complications include development of mitral regurgitation, tear and thrombosis. Mitral leaflet tear and development of infective endocarditis are an uncommon but might lead to increased morbidity, rehospitalization and mortality.

The clinical presentation and epidemiology of infective endocarditis (IE) have evolved over time. While the cornerstones of IE treatment remain antimicrobial therapy and surgery, percutaneous mechanical aspiration (PMA) has emerged as an option for carefully selected patients as a complementary modality, based on retrospective data, case series, and expert experience. In this comprehensive review, we summarize the proceedings from an inaugural summit dedicated to the discussion of PMA in the global management of IE, consisting of experts across multiple disciplines from diverse geographic regions and care environments.

Ceftobiprole was recently approved by the United States (US) Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of adult patients with bacteremia, including right-side endocarditis, acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections, and community-acquired bacterial pneumonia in adults and pediatrics. Ceftobiprole is an advanced-generation cephalosporin approved in many countries for the treatment of adults with community-acquired pneumonia and hospital-acquired pneumonia, excluding ventilator-associated pneumonia.
