Among a broad diversity of color centers hosted in layered van der Waals materials, the negatively charged boron vacancy (V) center in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is garnering considerable attention for the development of quantum sensing units on a two-dimensional platform. In this work, we investigate how the optical response of an ensemble of V centers evolves with the hBN thickness in a range of a few to hundreds of nanometers. We show that the photoluminescence intensity features a nontrivial evolution with thickness, which is quantitatively reproduced by numerical calculations taking into account thickness-dependent variations of the absorption, radiative lifetime, and radiation pattern of V centers. Besides providing an important resource to optimize the performances of quantum sensing units based on V centers in hBN, the thickness-dependent nanophotonic effects discussed in this work generally apply to any type of color center embedded in a van der Waals material.

We develop a fully vectorial and non-paraxial formalism to describe spontaneous parametric down-conversion in nonlinear thin films. The formalism is capable of treating slabs with a sub-wavelength thickness, describe the associated Fabry-Pérot effects, and even treat absorptive nonlinear materials. With this formalism, we perform an in-depth study of the dynamics of entangled photon-pair generation in nonlinear thin films, to provide a needed theoretical understanding for such systems that have recently attracted much experimental attention as sources of photon pairs.

Trilayer electrochemical actuators comprising an electrolyte layer sandwiched between two electrode layers have been shown to exhibit large deformations at low actuation voltages. Here we report the aerosol-jet printing (AJP) of high-aspect-ratio bending-type trilayer electrochemical microactuators comprised of Nafion as the electrolyte and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) as the electrode. We investigated how the thicknesses of the electrolyte and electrode layers affect the DC response of these actuators by fabricating high-aspect-ratio trilayer cantilevers with varied layer thicknesses (0.

Probing and manipulating the intriguing nonlinear optical responses in van der Waals (vdW) ferroelectrics offer opportunities for their applications in nanophotonics. Here, we report the observation of giant and tunable second-harmonic generation (SHG) in ferroelectric CuInPS (CIPS) and CIPS/MoS heterostructures. The results show that CIPS, ranging from multilayer to bulk-like samples, all exhibit strong SHG with giant anisotropy.

To develop alternative plasmonic materials for nanophotonic applications, the thickness-dependent optical properties of ultrathin plasmonic SrNbO (SNO) films deposited on MgO are investigated. As the thickness decreases from 10 to 2 nm, the film exhibits less metallic, epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) wavelength redshift and higher optical loss due to increased scattering. Nevertheless, the thinnest film still has a high carrier concentration of 10cm, and the real part of the dielectric functions of all films is less than zero in the near-infrared (NIR) wavelength region, indicating that the samples possess relatively high metallicity and plasmonic characteristics in the NIR.
