This study investigated the microstructure, mechanical properties, and nucleation mechanism of acicular ferrite (AF) present in hot-rolled Ti deoxidized steel. In our experiments, the impact toughness of Ti deoxidized steel is significantly increased to 144 J at -20 °C, while those Mn and Al deoxidized steels are only 9 J and 18 J, respectively. Interlocked AF is the primary microstructure of Ti deoxidized steel. The second-phase particles of the core-shell-type structure, in which TiO is the nucleus and TiO is the outermost shell, act as effective nucleating agents to stimulate AF nucleation. The low lattice disregistry between TiO and AF is the main factor contributing to the production of AF. It is also revealed that TiO and MnS fulfill the particular orientation relationship, contributing to the formation of an Mn-depleted zone (MDZ) adjacent to MnS, proposed to be one of the possible mechanisms for promoting AF nucleation.

Duplex stainless steel is a unique material for cast products, the use of which is possible in various fields. With the same chemical composition, melting, casting and heat treatment technology, pitting and crevice corrosion were observed at the interphase boundaries of non-metallic inclusions and the steel matrix. To increase the cleanliness of steel, it is necessary to carefully select the technology for deoxidizing with titanium or aluminum, as the most common deoxidizers, and the technology for modifying with rare earth metals.

In this paper, an experimental protocol of adding rare earth lanthanum (La) was used to refine and modify inclusions (AlO) in aluminum-deoxidized steel. An optical microscope (OM), a scanning electron microscope (SEM), and an energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) were used to study the impact of size distribution, number density, distribution uniformity, interfacial distance, area density, and so on of rare earth La on high-carbon hard wire steel inclusions. As indicated by the findings when the addition amount of La is 0.

Oxide metallurgy technology can improve the microstructure of a coarse-grained heat-affected zone (CGHAZ) but introduces extra inclusions. Local corrosion behavior of the CGHAZ of a Zr-Ti-Al-RE deoxidized steel was investigated in this work using theoretical calculations and experimental verification. The modified inclusions have a (Zr-Mg-Al-Ca-RE)O core claded by a CaS and TiN shell.

Increasingly MgO content in refining slag and molten steel is the major cause of corrosion of refractory materials at slag line during the refining process of Si-Mn deoxidized tire cord steel, the effects on the crystallization behavior of typical MnO-SiO-AlO based inclusions in tire cord steel were studied. The relation between the formation of high melting point and high hardness inclusions (AlO, 3AlO·2SiO, MgO·AlO and 2MgO·SiO) with MnO-SiO-AlO-(0wt.%, 4wt.
