A low-cost and renewable magnetite-pine bark (MPB) sorbent was evaluated in continuous-flow systems for the removal of various pharmaceuticals from municipal wastewater effluent following membrane bioreactor (MBR) treatment. A 33-day small-scale column test (bed volume: 791 cm) was conducted using duplicate columns of biochar (BC, Novocarbo) and activated carbon (AC, ColorSorb) as reference for two columns of BC and MPB in order to compare the efficiency of AC and MPB. After the small-scale column test, the pharmaceutical concentrations were generally below the detection limit.

Objective: This study examined the prevalence of the use of prescription medicines and other drugs by a selected subgroup of New Zealand drivers. The use of potentially impairing prescription drugs by the driving population is largely unknown. The population studied was drivers who were stopped by police, failed a breath alcohol test, elected to provide a blood sample for laboratory analysis, and had blood alcohol levels exceeding the legal limit.

Pharmaceuticals are emerging contaminants in the environment and are a ubiquitous presence in rivers downstream of wastewater treatment plant outfalls. Questions remain about the persistence of pharmaceuticals in rivers, and the uptake and bioconcentration of pharmaceuticals by aquatic plants. Our study took place in the Yarrowee/Leigh/Barwon River system in southeastern Australia.
