Repeat hospitalizations adversely impact the well-being of adults dually eligible for Medicare and Medicaid in the United States. This study aimed to identify behavioral, cognitive, and functional characteristics associated with the risk of a repeat hospital episode (HE) among the statewide population of dually eligible adults in Maryland receiving long-term services and supports prior to an HE between July 2018 and May 2020. The odds of experiencing a repeat HE within 30 days after an initial HE were positively associated with reporting difficulty with hearing (adjusted odds ratio, AOR: 1.10 [95% confidence interval: 1.02-1.19]), being easily distractible (AOR: 1.09 [1.00-1.18]), being self-injurious (AOR: 1.33 [1.09-1.63]), and exhibiting verbal abuse (AOR: 1.15 [1.02-1.30]). Conversely, displaying inappropriate public behavior (AOR: 0.62 [0.42-0.92]) and being dependent for eating (AOR: 0.91 [0.83-0.99]) or bathing (AOR: 0.79 [0.67-0.92]) were associated with reduced odds of a repeat HE. We also observed differences in the magnitude and direction of these associations among adults 65 years of age or older relative to younger counterparts.

Background: The Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) is a comprehensive care model that aims to promote aging in the home and community for older adults who are nursing-home eligible needs-wise. Older adults experience age-related barriers to accessing behavioral health (BH) services. PACE programs play an important role in providing all-inclusive health care for individuals over 55 who are dually eligible for Medicaid and Medicare.

Importance: Nearly all Medicare Advantage (MA) plans offer dental, vision, and hearing benefits not covered by traditional Medicare (TM). However, little is known about MA enrollees' use of those benefits or how much they cost MA insurers or enrollees.
Objective: To estimate use, out-of-pocket (OOP) spending, and insurer payments for dental, hearing, and vision services among Medicare beneficiaries.

In 2020, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services reintroduced Alzheimer's disease and related dementias to its risk-adjustment payment model for Medicare Advantage (MA) plans. Using 2017-20 data for 100 percent of community-dwelling beneficiaries enrolled in Medicare, we evaluated how the reintroduction of dementia to the risk-adjustment model affected rates of new (incident) dementia diagnoses among beneficiaries enrolled in MA relative to those enrolled in traditional Medicare. In response to the payment change, annual incident dementia diagnosis rates in MA increased by 11.

Background: Previous studies have estimated preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use among persons with commercial health insurance and Medicaid. However, data are lacking regarding PrEP use among those with Medicare.
Methods: Using a previously developed algorithm, we estimated the number of Medicare beneficiaries (MBs) with fee-for-service (FFS) claims who were prescribed PrEP from 2014 to 2021.
Introduction: The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has funded the Accountable Health Communities (AHC) model to test whether systematically identifying and addressing the health-related social needs (HRSNs) of individuals would impact healthcare utilization and total cost of care for Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries. Toward this effort, AHCs implement screening, referral, and community navigation services in their local areas. There are 28 CMS-funded AHCs nationwide, including the Kentucky Consortium for Accountable Health Communities (KC-AHC).
