A neural theory of human lightness computation is described and computer-simulated. The theory proposes that lightness is derived from transient ON and OFF cell responses in the early visual pathways that have different characteristic neural gains and that are generated by fixational eye movements (FEMs) as the eyes transit luminance edges in the image. The ON and OFF responses are combined with corollary discharge signals that encode the eye movement direction to create directionally selective ON and OFF responses.

The ability to consistently recognize an object despite variable sensory input is termed perceptual constancy. This ability is not innate; rather, it develops with experience early in life. We show that, when mice are naïve to an odor object, perceptual constancy is absent across increasing concentrations.

Fingertip friction is a key component of tactile perception. In active tactile exploration, friction forces depend on the applied normal force and on the sliding speed chosen. We have investigated whether humans perceive the speed dependence of friction for textured surfaces of materials, which show either increase or decrease of the friction coefficient with speed.

Symmetrical objects only project a symmetrical image onto the retina when viewed from certain angles. Previous work has investigated the ERP response to visual symmetry in frontoparallel and perspective views. When participants are attending to regularity, the ERPs are the same.
