Plant-plant interactions are important drivers for the functioning and structuring of dryland plant communities. Stressful conditions, mainly related to water availability, determine whether plant interactions result in net facilitation or competition. Many studies have been conducted on the impacts of mature individuals, trees, shrubs or tussock grasses, on woody seedlings but little is known about the biotic interactions when they all are at the same developmental stage under field conditions. Here we present a spatially replicated study with Olea europaea as the target species and Pistacia lentiscus and Macrochloa tenacissima as neigbors. We also implemented field techniques to increase water availability and, hence, reproduce an abiotic gradient of stress. Wild olive performance was sensitive to neighbors, water availability and site. Improved microcatchments, which in addition to site recreated a gradient of water availability, improved wild olive performance as well as planted neighbors negatively impacted olive seedlings. We observed increasing negative interacting effects as conditions become less stressful. This is in line with the stress-gradient-hypothesis but also provides important knowledge regarding plant interactions in drylands at the same development stage.

The proposed solar still was modified by integrating a rectangular aluminium box filled with paraffin wax and black gravel as the TESS and coupled with a solar air heater. Paraffin wax was selected due to its widespread availability and proven effectiveness in accelerating desalination, improving process uniformity, and maintaining optimal temperature levels.

The simulation of antral conditions for estimating drug apparent equilibrium solubility after a high-calorie, high-fat meal is challenging. In this study, (1) we measured the apparent equilibrium solubility of two model lipophilic drugs, ketoconazole and danazol, in antral aspirates collected at various time points after a minced high-calorie, high-fat meal and a glass of water 30 min after initiation of meal administration, and we designated one point estimate for ketoconazole and one point estimate for danazol; (2) we evaluated the usefulness of FeSSGF-V2 and FEDGAS pH = 3 in reproducing the two point estimates; (3) we evaluated potential compositions of FeSSGF-V3 that simulate the pH, the buffer capacity toward both less acidic and more acidic values, and the antral lipid and protein contents with easily accessible, commercially available products, and (4) we identified the most useful composition of FeSSGF-V3 for reproducing the two point estimates. For both model drugs, apparent solubility in FeSSGF-V2 and in FEDGAS pH 3 deviated substantially from the corresponding point estimate.
