Although gold(iii) chemistry has tremendously progressed in the past 2 decades, gold(iii) catecholate complexes remain extremely scarce and underdeveloped. Upon preparation and full characterization of P^C-cyclometalated gold(iii) complexes, we serendipitously uncovered an intriguing catechol exchange process at gold(iii). Electron-rich catecholates turned out to be readily displaced by electron-poor -benzoquinones. DFT calculations revealed an original path for this transformation involving two consecutive Single Electron Transfer events between the catecholate and -benzoquinone moieties while gold maintains its +III oxidation state. This catechol/-benzoquinone exchange at gold(iii) represents a new path for the exchange of X-type ligands at transition metals.

An efficient protocol for the extraction of pigment-free active polyphenol oxidase and soluble proteins from plant cells.

Biol Methods Protoc

Department of Plant and Microbial Biology, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC 27695, United States.

The elimination of brownish pigments from plant protein extracts has been a challenge in plant biochemistry studies. Although numerous approaches have been developed to reduce pigments for enzyme assays, none has been able to completely remove pigments from plant protein extracts for biochemical studies. A simple and effective protocol was developed to completely remove pigments from plant protein extracts.

Intercalation of pyrazolone-based oxalamide metal complexes into Na-montmorillonite for catalytic liquid-phase oxidation of phenol using HO.

Department of Chemistry and Chemical Processing Technologies, Vocational School of Technical Sciences, Batman University, Batman, Turkiye.

The intercalation of pyrazolone-based oxalamide metal complexes into Na-montmorillonite (Na-MMT) for catalytic liquid-phase oxidation of phenol using HO was undertaken by a flexible ligand method using metal ions including Mn(II), Zn(II), and Sn(II). First, the metal ions were exchanged with the sodium ions of Na-MMT, and then these metal ions were complexed with a new pyrazolone-based oxalamide ligand. The intercalated metal complexes were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and thermogravimetric analysis.

Mechanical Stabilization of Alginate Hydrogel Fiber and 3D Constructs by Mussel-Inspired Catechol Modification.

Polymers (Basel)

Department of Biomedical Engineering, Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU), Seobu-ro 2066, Jangan-gu, Suwon 16419, Gyeonggi-do, Korea.

Alginate is a representative biocompatible natural polymer with low cost for a variety of biomedical applications, such as wound dressing, drug delivery systems, tissue scaffolds, and 3D bioprinting. Particularly, the rapid and facile gelation of alginate via ionic interactions with divalent cations has been used for in situ 3D hydrogel fiber formation, which is potentially applicable to engineering cell alignment. However, challenges in enhancing the mechanical properties of alginate hydrogel fibers under physiological conditions are unresolved because of their fast dissociation by ion exchange.

New polyfunctional sterically hindered 3,5-di--butylcatechols with an additional phenolic group in the sixth position connected by a bridging sulfur atom-(6-(CH-S-tBuPhenol)-3,5-DBCat)H (), (6-(S-tBuPhenol)-3,5-DBCat)H (), and (6-(S-Phenol)-3,5-DBCat)H () (3,5-DBCat is dianion 3,5-di--butylcatecolate)-were synthesized and characterized in detail. The exchange reaction between catechols and with triphenylantimony(V) dibromide in the presence of triethylamine leads to the corresponding triphenylantimony(V) catecholates (6-(CH-S-tBuPhenol)-3,5-DBCat)SbPh () and (6-(S-Phenol)-3,5-DBCat)SbPh (). The electrochemical properties of catechols - and catecholates and were investigated using cyclic voltammetry.
