Designing a pediatric circulatory support system has several unique challenges related to the small and growing body size. In addition, there is an extra burden on caregivers as these patients can be very active though not yet capable of managing the life sustaining system. This article describes some of the design challenges and offers hope from existing commercial systems being applied to larger pediatric patients.
