The FDA approval on September 29, 2023, for "class III " blood tests to assess hereditary cancer risk make widely available tests that may be obtained through a Direct to Consumer (DTC) path. There is concern that germ-line predisposition tests may not be reimbursed by insurance adding financial burdens to individuals and families. It is generally agreed in the fields of oncology and genetics that germ-line testing for disease susceptibility including cancer is best performed under care of a healthcare provider with genetic counseling.

Background: A growing population of youth with medical complexity (YMC) are entering adult health care, education, and social systems in which their needs have been largely neglected. To better support YMC and their families, an understanding of how they manage the challenges of transitioning to adult services is needed. The aim of this study was to examine how families of YMC adapt to challenges and opportunities posed by the youth's transition to adulthood and transfer to adult services.

Patient safety advocates identify concerns for the impact of AI on patient safety. Patients identified the following 4 main areas that AI developers, regulatory bodies, and clinical users of AI are asked to consider: data integrity and bias, efficacy, payment, and transparency toward shared learning. Increased patient involvement in the development, use assessment and oversight of the technology is critical to ensure trust and trustworthiness in the use of AI in patient care.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFResearchers and practitioners are increasingly using machine-generated synthetic data as a tool for advancing health science and practice, by expanding access to health data while-potentially-mitigating privacy and related ethical concerns around data sharing. While using synthetic data in this way holds promise, we argue that it also raises significant ethical, legal, and policy concerns, including persistent privacy and security problems, accuracy and reliability issues, worries about fairness and bias, and new regulatory challenges. The virtue of synthetic data is often understood to be its detachment from the data subjects whose measurement data is used to generate it.

The project INTREPID aims to support safer operations in the form of more efficient, fast, and safe disaster site assessments.
