AI Article Synopsis

  • The BE FAST acronym, which includes Balance and Eye symptoms along with the original FAST signs, was intended to help the public better recognize stroke symptoms, but previous studies showed mixed results in improving detection.
  • A pilot study with 174 participants found that while both BE FAST and FAST had similar overall recall rates at 30 days, BE FAST participants struggled significantly more to remember all symptoms shortly after learning them and over time.
  • The study concluded that using the original FAST acronym resulted in better retention of stroke symptoms compared to BE FAST, indicating that adding Balance and Eye signs may not be beneficial for public awareness.

Article Abstract

Background: Balance, Eye, Face, Arm, Speech, Time (BE FAST) was proposed to increase the public's ability to recognize more signs of stroke by adding balance (B) and eyesight changes (E) to the stroke acronym FAST (Face, Arm, Speech, Time). Previous prospective studies suggested these additions did not result in increased stroke detection.

Methods And Results: A randomized, assessor blinded prospective pilot study assessed retention of BE FAST and FAST. The 174 participants were randomized to 1 of 2 education arms, educated similarly visually and auditorily, and retention was tested at 3 time points. Mnemonic recall was similar at 30 days (79.5% versus 69.8%, =0.104). Significantly lower retention was seen in the BE FAST group's ability to recall all symptoms at 3 to 5 minutes (75% versus 30.2%, <0.001), 60 minutes (70.5% versus 41.9%, <0.001), and 30 days (51.1% versus 24.4%, <0.001). Significantly higher retention was observed in the FAST group for partial recall at 3 to 5 minutes (94.3% versus 84.9%, =0.041), 60 minutes (86.4% versus 77.9%, =0.045), and 30 days (76.1% versus 59.3%, =0.012). For BE FAST, retention of more common symptoms at 30 days was lower for face (78.4% versus 60.5%, =0.010), speech (65.9% versus 47.7%, =0.015), and arm (63.6% versus 52.3%, =0.131).

Conclusion: Significantly higher retention and ability to recall stroke symptoms, fully or partially, was found with FAST. Adding B and E to FAST resulted in lower retention of more common symptoms.

Background: Despite progress made towards SDG 3, sub-Saharan Africa lags behind the rest of the world, accounting for over 50% of global neonatal deaths. The increased number of hospital births in the region has not reciprocated the reduction in neonatal mortality rates. Sick newborns face uncertain journeys from peripheral facilities to specialized centres arriving in suboptimal conditions, which impacts their outcomes, due partly to the scarcity of dedicated neonatal transport services.

Shoulder and elbow injuries are prevalent among baseball players, particularly pitchers, who experience repetitive eccentric loading of the shoulder, leading to muscle damage and increased injury risk. Nearly 40% of shoulder injuries in baseball occur in pitchers, with many facing low rates of return to sport. The rotator cuff (RC) muscles-supraspinatus (SSP), infraspinatus (ISP), subscapularis (SSC), and teres minor (TMin)-are crucial for shoulder stability, movement, and force generation, particularly in overhead sports.

The Benefit-Finding Intervention, a face-to-face psychoeducation program with a focus on the positive meanings of caregiving, has been found to reduce depressive symptoms and burden in dementia caregivers. The program was revamped into a computer-delivered web-based program to enable 24/7 access without location restriction. This study evaluates the efficacy of this new online program called Positive Dementia Caregiving in 30 Days (PDC30).

Background: The 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh conflict resulted in displacement of approximately 90,000 ethnic Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia, exacerbating existing vulnerabilities in the region. This study investigated food insecurity among displaced populations and host communities in Armenia during the conflict.

Methods: This study is a secondary analysis of cross-sectional data obtained from the 2020 REACH ARM Database Multi-Sector Needs Assessment (MSNA), which was conducted across six Armenian provinces.

Importance: As average life expectancy increases, the role of beauty in quality of life (QOL) becomes more important. Invasive rejuvenation methods, such as cosmetic surgery and botulinum toxin injections, do not address the underlying causes of facial aging, are expensive, and carry inherent risks. Acupuncture, as a holistic alternative, may offer a safer method for facial rejuvenation by addressing the overall health of the body.
