Background: The merits of technology have been adopted in capturing patient-reported outcomes (PROs) by incorporating PROs into electronic systems. Following the development of an electronic system, evaluation of system performance is crucial to ensuring the collection of meaningful data. In contemporary PRO literature, electronic system validation is overlooked, and evidence on validation methods is lacking.

Objective: This study aims to introduce a generalized concept to guide electronic patient-reported outcome (ePRO) providers in planning for system-specific validation methods.

Methods: Since electronic systems are essentially products of software engineering endeavors, electronic systems used to collect PRO should be viewed from a computer science perspective with consideration to the health care environment. On this basis, a testing model was blueprinted and applied to a newly developed ePRO system designed for clinical use in pediatric dentistry (electronic Personal Assessment Questionnaire-Paediatric Dentistry) to investigate its thoroughness.

Results: A behavior-based model of ePRO system validation was developed based on the principles of user acceptance testing and patient-centered care. The model allows systematic inspection of system specifications and identification of technical errors through simulated positive and negative usage pathways in open and closed environments. The model was able to detect 15 positive errors with 1 unfavorable response when applied to electronic Personal Assessment Questionnaire-Paediatric Dentistry system testing.

Conclusions: The application of the behavior-based model to a newly developed ePRO system showed a high ability for technical error detection in a systematic fashion. The proposed model will increase confidence in the validity of ePRO systems as data collection tools in future research and clinical practice.

Atomic Decompositions of Periodic Electronic-Structure Simulations.

We present a new theory for partitioning simulations of periodic and solid-state systems into physically sound atomic contributions at the level of Kohn-Sham density functional theory. Our theory is based on spatially localized linear combinations of crystalline Gaussian-type orbitals and, as such, capable of exposing local features within periodic electronic structures in a more intuitive and robust manner than alternatives based on the spatial distribution of atomic basis functions alone. Early decomposed cohesive energies of both molecular polymers and different crystalline polymorphs demonstrate how the atomic properties yielded by our theory convincingly align with the expected charge polarization in these systems, also whenever partial charges and Madelung energies may lend themselves somewhat ambiguous to interpretation.

In the circulatory system, the microenvironment surrounding cancer cells is complex and involves multiple coupled factors. We selected two core physical factors, shear stress and hydraulic resistance, and constructed a microfluidic device with dual negative inputs to study the trade-off movement behavior of cancer cells when facing coupled factors. We detected significant shear stress escape phenomena in the MDA-MB-231 cell line and qualitatively explained this behavior using a cellular force model.

Holographically designed aperiodic lattices (ALs) have proven to be an exciting engineering technique for achieving electrically switchable single- or multi-frequency emissions in terahertz (THz) semiconductor lasers. Here, we employ the nonlinear transfer matrix modeling method to investigate multi-wavelength nonlinear (sum- or difference-) frequency generation within an integrated THz (idler) laser cavity that also supports optical (pump and signal) waves. The laser cavity includes an aperiodic lattice, which engineers the idler photon lifetimes and effective refractive indices.

However, most of the studies focused on light-selective LSCs, and less attention was paid to the utilization of the full solar spectrum. In this study, a lead-free microcrystal CsAgNaBiInCl (CANBIC) perovskite phosphor is demonstrated to have bifunctional effects of luminescent down-shifting (LDS) and light scattering for the fabrication of LSCs, realizing light response from ultraviolet (UV) to NIR regions by an edge-mounted Si solar cell.
