We report the catalytic generation of pyridyl radicals through photoexcitation of the electron donor-acceptor (EDA) complex, which enables the C2-selective heteroarylation of indole under ambient conditions. In this manifold, catalytic triarylamine and chloropyridine aggregate into an EDA complex in the presence of an inorganic base, making readily available chloropyridines good precursors for the generation of diverse pyridyl radicals. Given the broad reaction scope, this catalytic EDA complex protocol provides robust access to heterobiaryl scaffolds that are widely present in biologically important molecules.

The factors controlling the catalytic activity in photochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are studied in detail for two macrocyclic cobalt compounds bearing two N-heterocyclic carbenes and two pyridyl donors ( and , where has a methoxy substituent on each pyridyl ligand). The present study adopts an aqueous photosystem consisting of EDTA, [Ru(bpy)] (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine), and MV (MV = methylviologen) at pH = 5. Both catalysts are shown to promote HER in a similar efficiency (TON = 12-13 in 6 h), revealing a minor contribution of the electron-donating methoxy substituents.

Two rare two-dimensional Ln-radical networks, namely, [{Ln(tfa)}(NIT-4Py)] [Ln = Gd and Tb ; tfa = trifluoroacetylacetonato; and NIT-4Py = 2-(4-pyridyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide], have been successfully constructed and characterized. In these complexes, each NIT-4Py radical functions as a tridentate ligand to ligate three Ln ions, creating a 2D network with linear five-spin [Ln(NIT)] nodes. Ferromagnetic Ln-NO interactions govern the characteristic magnetic behavior of a finite spin system.

Cyclopropanes, valuable C3 building blocks in organic synthesis, possess high strain energy and inherent stability. We present an efficient, environmentally benign 1,3-oxyheteroarylation of aryl cyclopropanes using azine -oxides as bifunctional reagents under visible light irradiation. This metal-free method yields β-pyridyl ketones under mild conditions.

Stable triarylmethyl radicals are the most common carbon radical building blocks and have recently attracted much attention for their luminescent properties. However, magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) discovered by Michael Faraday and magnetic circularly polarized luminescence (MCPL) have not been observed for simple triarylmethyl radicals, probably due to their photodegradability. Here we report the first observation of MCD and MCPL of triarylmethyl radicals in solution using racemic mixtures of (3,5-dichloro-4-pyridyl)bis(2,4,6-trichlorophenyl)methyl radical (PyBTM) and (3,5-difluoro-4-pyridyl)bis(2,4,6-trichlorophenyl)methyl radical (FPyBTM), which are much more photostable than simple triphenylmethyl radical derivatives.

Aryl ketones are often used as photosensitizers and photoinitiators. Free radical intermediates have been suggested, but not confirmed, to be generated after photoirradiation. Here we found, unexpectedly, that a persistent radical was produced from di-2-pyridyl ketone after UV irradiation, which was detected by the direct ESR method.
