The anti-cancer potential of eugenol (EUG) is well recognized, whereas that of spermidine (SPD) is subject to dispute and requires further research. The anti-tumorigenic potential of wheat germ SPD (150 µM) and clove EUG (100 µM), alone, in combination as SPD+EUG (50 µM + 100 µM) and, as a supplement (SUPPL; 0.6 µM SPD + 50 µM EUG), was investigated on both metastatic SW620 and primary Caco-2 colorectal cancer (CRC) spheroids.

Bedrock-Dependent Effects of Climate Change on Terricolous Lichens Along Elevational Gradients in the Alps.

J Fungi (Basel)

December 2024

BIOME Lab, Department of Biological, Geological and Environmental Sciences, Alma Mater Studiorum University of Bologna, Via Irnerio 42, 40126 Bologna, Italy.

In this study, we focused on the bedrock-dependent effects of climate change on terricolous lichen communities along elevational gradients in the Alps. In particular, we contrasted between carbonatic and siliceous bedrock, hypothesizing more favourable conditions on siliceous than on carbonatic bedrock, where dryer conditions may exacerbate the effects of climate change. To test this hypothesis, we compared terricolous lichen diversity patterns between the two bedrock types in terms of (1) species richness, (2) beta-diversity, (3) proportion of cryophilous species, and (4) functional diversity, also testing the effect of the elevational gradient as a proxy for expected climate warming.

The recommended treatment for early glottic cancer is trans-oral laser microsurgery, with excellent oncological and functional outcomes. The aim of this study is to evaluate oncological and functional outcomes in patients who underwent monolateral type III laser cordectomy for early glottic cancer. A total of 104 patients were enrolled.

The intensity of respiratory treatment in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is traditionally adjusted based on oxygenation severity, as defined by the mild, moderate, and severe Berlin classifications. However, ventilator-induced lung injury (VILI) is primarily determined by ventilator settings, namely tidal volume, respiratory rate, and positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP). All these variables, along with respiratory elastance, are included in the concept of mechanical power.

Background: Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) families comprise a disproportionately low percentage of home and freestanding birth center births in New Mexico (NM), despite NM Medicaid coverage of care by Licensed Midwives (LMs) in these settings. The purpose of this study was to examine why low income BIPOC seek out LM care, how they benefit from this model of care, and which factors facilitate and obstruct access.

Methods: We conducted 7 focus groups with 55 low income BIPOC individuals who had birthed in New Mexico in the past 5 years.
