Effect of degree of substitution of octenyl succinate on starch micelles for synthesis and stability of selenium nanoparticles: Towards selenium supplements.

To develop a promising selenium supplement that overcomes the instability and poor water dispersibility of selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs), we synthesized a series of amphiphilic octenyl succinic anhydride starch (OSAS) through esterification. As the degree of substitution (DS) increased, the particle size of OSAS micelles and the critical micelle concentration (CMC) decreased. FTIR and XRD analysis confirmed the successful introduction of octenyl succinic anhydride groups onto starch. Subsequently, OSAS micelles were used as carriers to synthesize SeNPs via in situ chemical reduction, forming SeNPs-loaded self-assembled starch nano-micelles (OSAS-SeNPs). The OSAS-SeNPs exhibited spherical dispersion in water with an average diameter of 116.1 ± 2.3 nm, contributed to enhanced hydrophobic interactions. TEM images showed a core-shell structure with SeNPs as the core and OSAS as the shell. FTIR results indicated hydrogen bonding interactions between OSAS and SeNPs. Due to the negatively charged OSAS shell and hydrogen bonding (OH⋯Se), OSAS-SeNPs remained non-aggregated for one month at room temperature, demonstrating remarkable stability. This study suggests that using OSAS can address the synthesis and stability issues of SeNPs, making it a potential selenium supplement candidate for further evaluation as an anticancer agent.

Background: The long-term neurological impact of the SARS-CoV-2 virus is unknown and it remains to be seen whether it would create a surge in cases of dementia and cognitive decline years later, which is already a global public health challenge. Our group has previously shown that participants cognitive functioning as measured via mobile-based assessments using smartphone-based cognitive tests did not differ based on their COVID status. Background: The impact of knowledge of β-amyloid status on cognitively unimpaired persons' cognitive test performance is unknown.

Method: Cognitively unimpaired adults aged 65-80 with a first-degree relative with AD received a dementia risk estimate and were randomly assigned to disclosure (D+) or non-disclosure (D-) of their β-amyloid PET scan result. Facile and Highly Selective Deprotection of Aryl Propionates/Acetates Using a Supported Lewis Acid Catalyst (20% InCl/MCM-41).

The selective deprotection of substituted aryl esters like acetates and propionates in the presence of different electron-donating and -withdrawing functional groups to the corresponding phenols in good yields was reported using the Lewis acid supported solid acid catalyst 20 InCl/MCM-41 prepared by the wet impregnation method. The textural and microscopic properties of the catalyst were studied, which revealed a high degree of dispersion of InCl over MCM-41, promising quantification of Lewis acidity, and well-ordered honeycomb structure. The methodology was further explored for the selective deprotection of acetates and propionates in the presence of substituted amides that remain unaltered.
