Agricultural mulching is an important input for modern agricultural production and plays an important role in guaranteeing food security worldwide. At present, polyethylene (PE) mulching is still commonly used in agricultural production in most countries around the world, which is non-biodegradable, and years of mulching have caused serious agricultural white pollution. Lignin is one of the three major components of plant cell walls, and it is also the main renewable natural aromatic compounds in nature. Lignin-based composite film materials are green, biodegradable, and show good prospects for development in the field of agricultural mulch. This paper introduces the types, structure, and application status of lignin, summarizes the preparation of lignin-based composite film materials and its latest research progress, focuses on the types, preparation methods, and application examples of lignin-based agricultural mulching, and looks forward to the future development prospects of lignin-based agricultural mulching.

Wood-loving magic mushrooms from Australia are saprotrophic invaders in the Northern Hemisphere.

Fungal Syst Evol

December 2024

Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA.

Magic mushrooms are fungi that produce psilocybin, an entheogen with long-term cultural use and a breakthrough compound for treatment of mental health disorders. Fungal populations separated by geography are candidates for allopatric speciation, yet species connectivity typically persists because there is minimal divergence at functional parts of mating compatibility genes. We studied whether connectivity is maintained across populations of a widespread species complex of magic mushrooms that has infiltrated the Northern Hemisphere from a hypothesised centre of origin in Australasia.

Natural biopolymer-based liquid mulching films (LMF) have received widespread attention, whereas the fragile structure and limited functionality have severely restricted their application. Herein, polydopamine-coated montmorillonite micro/nanoparticles enhanced pectin-based sprayable multifunctional liquid mulching films (P-MMT@PDA LMF) were prepared. Dopamine has abundant active sites, and its self-polymerization onto the surface of MMT improves the compatibility of MMT with pectin chains, facilitates the homogeneous dispersion of MMT@PDA in pectin polymers, and makes them more tightly entangled through hydrogen bonding.

Comparison of plastisphere microbiomes during the degradation of conventional and biodegradable mulching films.

J Hazard Mater

Key Laboratory of Environmental Biotechnology, Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100085, China. Electronic address:

Biodegradable mulch films (BDMs) are becoming increasingly popular in agriculture and are emerging as an alternative to conventional polyethylene (PE) films. However, the intricate details surrounding the establishment and growth of microorganisms on BDMs and PE during their degradation in agricultural fields remain unclear. In this study, the succession of bacterial communities in farmland soil and the plastispheres of PE and BDMs were compared through 16S rRNA gene high-throughput sequencing and real-time PCR.

Ammonia (NH) volatilization caused by urea application has negative implications for human health, environmental quality, and the value of nitrogen fertilizers. It remains to be investigated how management strategies should be adopted to not only reduce NH volatilization but also improve nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) in the agriculture industry at present. Hence, a two-year field trial, including subplots, was conducted to simultaneously evaluate the effects of mulching treatments (NM: non-mulching; SM: straw mulching) and different fertilizer treatments (U: urea; U + NBPT: urea plus 1% N-(n-butyl) thiophosphoric triamide; U + CRU: the mixture of urea and controlled-release urea at a 3:7 ratio; U + OF: urea plus commercial organic fertilizer at a 3:7 ratio) on NH volatilization, crop production, and NUE in an oilseed rape-maize rotation system in the sloping farmland of purple soil in southwestern China between 2021 and 2023.

Assessment of microplastic ecological risk and environmental carrying capacity of agricultural soils based on integrated characterization: A case study.

Sci Total Environ

January 2025

Innovation Center of Pesticide Research, Department of Applied Chemistry, College of Science, China Agricultural University, Beijing 100193, PR China. Electronic address:

Microplastic pollution in agricultural soils poses a significant threat to soil quality and environmental sustainability. This study investigated the composition, abundance, distribution, ecological risk, and environmental carrying capacity of microplastic pollution in the Tarim River Basin (TRB), China. The risk quotient combined with soil environmental carrying capacity (SECC) approaches was proposed to evaluate ecological risks and soil sustainability.
