The gut's symbiome, a hidden metabolic organ, has gained scientific interest for its crucial role in human health. Acting as a biochemical factory, the gut microbiome produces numerous small molecules that significantly impact host metabolism. Metabolic profiling facilitates the exploration of its influence on human health and disease through the symbiotic relationship.

Objectives: To investigate the roles of the systemic inflammatory response index (SIRI) and other biochemical markers obtained from maternal blood in determining the diagnosis and severity of pregnancy cholestasis.

Material And Methods: In this retrospective case-control study, a total of 815 pregnant women including 546 healthy pregnant women [serum total bile acid (TBA) level < 10 μmol/L, control group], 185 patients with mild cholestasis [serum TBA level < 40 μmol/L, mild intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) group] and 84 patients with severe cholestasis (serum TBA level ≥ 40 μmol/L, severe ICP group) were evaluated. The groups were compared regarding demographic data, clinical characteristics, SIRI (neutrophilcount*monocytecount/lymphocyte count), and other laboratory data.

Nutritional assessment of patients with liver cirrhosis in the outpatient setting: A narrative review.

Nutrition

December 2024

Department of Medicine, University of Melbourne, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia; Department of Gastroenterology, Western Health, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

Malnutrition is common in liver cirrhosis and is associated with increased rates of complications, hospitalization, and mortality. There are no consensus guidelines for malnutrition assessment in liver cirrhosis and a large number of clinicians do not routinely assess for malnutrition in patients with liver cirrhosis. This review explores the tools available for assessment of malnutrition in patients with liver cirrhosis, including nutritional screening protocols, anthropometric tools, biochemical tools, techniques analyzing body composition and functional assessments.

Large Variations in Phenylalanine Concentrations Associate Adverse Cardiac Remodelling in Adult Patients With Phenylketonuria-A Long-Term CMR Study.

J Cachexia Sarcopenia Muscle

February 2025

Department of Cardiology, Angiology and Intensive Care Medicine, Deutsches Herzzentrum der Charité, Berlin, Germany.

Background: Despite a phenylalanine (Phe) restrictive diet, most adult patients with 'classical' phenylketonuria (PKU) maintain life-long Phe concentrations above the normal range and receive tyrosine (Tyr) and protein-enriched diets to maintain acceptable concentrations and ensure normal development. While these interventions are highly successful in preventing adverse neuropsychiatric complications, their long- term consequences are incompletely explored. We observed early cardiomyopathic characteristics and associated hemodynamic changes in adult PKU patients and present here the results of a longitudinal evaluation of cardiac phenotype.
