Maintaining the differentiated phenotype and function of primary hepatocytes and represents a distinct challenge. Our paper describes microcapsules comprised of a bioactive polymer and overcoated with an ultrathin film as a means of maintaining the function of entrapped hepatocytes for at least two weeks. We previously demonstrated that heparin (Hep)-based microcapsules improved the function of entrapped primary hepatocytes by capturing and releasing cell-secreted inductive signals, including hepatocyte growth factor (HGF). Further enhancement of hepatic function could be gained by loading exogenous HGF into microcapsules. In this study, we demonstrate that an ultrathin coating of tannic acid (TA) further enhances endogenous HGF signaling for entrapped hepatocytes and increases by 2-fold the rate of uptake of exogenous HGF by Hep microcapsules. Hepatocytes in overcoated microcapsules exhibited better function and hepatic gene expression than in capsules without a TA coating. Our study showcases the potential application of ultrathin coatings to modulate the bioactivity of microcapsules and may enable the use of encapsulated hepatocytes for modeling drug toxicity or treating liver diseases.

The development of diverse microstructures has substantially contributed to recent progress in high-performance electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption materials, providing a versatile platform for the modulation of absorption properties. Exploring multidimensional microstructures and developing tailored and gentle strategies for their precise optimization can substantially address the current challenges posed by relatively unclear underlying mechanisms. Here, a series of 2D/1D heterogeneous NiO@PPy composites featuring hollow hierarchical microstructures are successfully synthesized using a straightforward strategy combining sacrificial templating with chemical oxidative polymerization.

Currently, the development of polymeric hole-transporting materials (HTMs) lags behind that of small-molecule HTMs in inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs). A critical challenge is that conventional polymeric HTMs are incapable of forming ultra-thin and conformal coatings like self-assembly monolayers (SAMs), especially for substrates with rough surface morphology. Herein, we address this challenge by designing anchorable polymeric HTMs (CP1 to CP5).

Power generation and architectural beauty are equally important for designing efficient and esthetically appealing bifacial perovskite solar cells (PSCs). In this work, efficient and multicolored p-i-n-structured PSCs are achieved by taking advantage of a dielectric/metal/dielectric (DMD)-type (MoO/Ni/Ag/MoO) transparent counter electrode. The MoO/Ni underlayer effectively promotes the formation of a continuous and conductive ultrathin Ag transparent film, especially the 1 nm Ni seed layer adjusts the interface energy level between perovskite/MoO and Ag, resulting in Ohmic contact of the electrode to promote charge extraction and collection.

Membrane technology is an important component of resource recovery. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with inherent long-range ordered structure and permanent porosity are ideal materials for fabricating advanced membrane. Zwitterionic COFs have unique features beyond single ionic COFs containing anions or cations.
