Physiological or genetic assays and computational modeling are valuable tools for understanding animals' visual discrimination capabilities. Yet sometimes, the results generated by these methods appear not to jive with other aspects of an animal's appearance or natural history, and behavioral confirmatory tests are warranted. Here we examine the peculiar case of a male jumping spider that displays red, black, white, and UV color patches during courtship despite the fact that, according to microspectrophotometry and color vision modeling, they are unlikely able to discriminate red from black.

The increasing demand for sustainable alternatives to conventional antifungal agents has prompted extensive research into the antifungal properties of plant essential oils (EOs). This study investigates the use of EOs mixture (Origanum vulgare, Moringa oleifera, and Cinnamomum verum) for controlling fungal deterioration in wall paintings at the archaeological Youssef Kamal Palace in Nag Hammadi, Egypt. Fungal isolates were collected from deteriorated wall paintings and identified using phenotypic and genotypic analyses.

The formation of metal soaps or carboxylates in oil paintings is a widely studied topic. Expanding upon the extant research on the subject, this work investigates the formation of metal soaps as pertaining to alkyd-based media. Especially popular in modern and contemporary art, alkyd paints are complex commercial formulations mainly containing a polyester backbone obtained by the condensation of glycerol and phthalic acids, where the third free alcoholic function is esterified with a blend of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids.

Background: A stemless plastic scintillation detector (SPSD) is composed of an organic plastic scintillator coupled to an organic photodiode. Previous research has shown that SPSDs are ideally suited to challenging dosimetry measurements such as output factors and profiles in small fields. Lacking from the current literature is a systematic effort to optimize the performance of the photodiode component of the detector.

An important step in the workflow for a complete arch fixed implant-supported prosthesis is the fabrication of a prototype resin prosthesis to allow the patient to visualize the definitive treatment outcome and also to use as an interim prosthesis. Producing a prototype prosthesis with the natural appearance of the gingival color and contour has been challenging. Current methods include painted stains, manually applied pink composite resin or autopolymerizing acrylic resin, and multicolored resin blocks, but these are all relatively expensive, have less than optimal esthetics, and are labor-intensive and time-consuming.
