Nonoperative Management of Pretibial Lacerations in a Nurse-Led Clinic: An Observational Study.

Plast Aesthet Nurs (Phila)

December 2024

Sebastian Kosasih, MBBS, BSc(Hons), MRCS, is a Plastic Surgery Specialist Trainee at St Andrew's Centre for Plastic Surgery & Burns, Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford, United Kingdom.

In our tertiary plastic surgery center, patients with wounds that will not be treated surgically, including complex pretibial wounds, that would traditionally have been managed operatively are managed on an outpatient basis in a nurse-led pretibial laceration clinic. We conducted a study to investigate dressing usage and assess correlators with healing time or number of appointments. We collected data regarding dressings used, time to discharge, and number of appointments retrospectively over 14 months between 2019 and 2021.

Evaluating the impact of Canadian cannabis legalization on cannabis use outcomes in emerging adults: Comparisons to a US control sample via a natural experiment.

Int J Drug Policy

December 2024

Peter Boris Centre for Addictions Research, St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton and McMaster University, Canada; Michael G. DeGroote Centre for Medicinal Cannabis Research, McMaster University and St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton, Canada.

Background: Recreational cannabis legalization marked a significant policy shift in Canada, but has been difficult to evaluate because of the absence of a control group. Although it is unfeasible to evaluate legalization using a randomized controlled trial design, sophisticated statistical techniques can employ quasi-experimental designs using natural experiments. This study evaluates the impact of cannabis legalization in a longitudinal cohort of Canadian emerging adults by comparing changes in cannabis use frequency and related consequences over time to changes in a similar cohort in a United States jurisdiction where no policy change took place.

Study on uniaxial compression mechanical properties of 3D printed columnar joint test blocks.

Sci Rep

December 2024

College of Civil Engineering and Transportation, Hohai University, Nanjing, 210098, China.

The columnar joint skeleton of 3D printed Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) material, the skeleton of cement mortar and ultraviolet aging treatment are combined to pour the columnar joint rock mass (CJRM) test block. The strength, deformation, energy and failure modes of the specimens with different dip angles were analyzed by uniaxial compression test. The influence of joint skeleton on the strength of the test block was analyzed.

This study examined the pathophysiological effects of venoms from neonate and adult specimens of the viperid snake , focusing on their ability to activate various blood clotting factors in human plasma. All venoms exhibited strong procoagulant properties. In concentration-response tests, the clotting potency of the neonate venoms fell within the range of their parents' maximum clotting velocities and areas under the curve.
