The presence of disorder substantially influences the behaviour of physical systems. It can give rise to slow or glassy dynamics, or to a complete suppression of transport as in Anderson insulators, where normally extended wavefunctions such as light fields or electronic Bloch waves become exponentially localized. The combined effect of disorder and interactions is central to the richness of condensed-matter physics. In bosonic systems, it can also lead to additional quantum states such as the Bose glass-an insulating but compressible state without long-range phase coherence that emerges in disordered bosonic systems and is distinct from the well-known superfluid and Mott insulating ground states of interacting bosons. Here we report the experimental realization of the two-dimensional Bose glass using ultracold atoms in an eight-fold symmetric quasicrystalline optical lattice. By probing the coherence properties of the system, we observe a Bose-glass-to-superfluid transition and map out the phase diagram in the weakly interacting regime. We furthermore demonstrate that it is not possible to adiabatically traverse the Bose glass on typical experimental timescales by examining the capability to restore coherence and discuss the connection to the expected non-ergodicity of the Bose glass. Our observations are in good agreement with recent quantum Monte Carlo predictions and pave the way for experimentally testing the connection between the Bose glass, many-body localization and glassy dynamics more generally.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated how the structure and dynamics of electrolyte solutions affect ionic conductivity by measuring conductivity, viscosity, and dielectric relaxation in lithium bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide (LiTFSI) in triglyme.
  • Findings revealed that conductivity (σ) and dielectric relaxation times (⟨τ⟩) are somewhat independent of viscosity (η) and follow specific proportional relationships.
  • Additionally, Raman spectroscopy showed ion pair formation and an increase in glass transition temperature with LiTFSI concentration, highlighting interesting dependencies of conductivity on solution properties that could inform battery applications.

The effects of frustration on extended supersolid states is a largely unexplored subject in the realm of cold-atom systems. In this work, we explore the impact of quasicrystalline lattices on the supersolid phases of dipolar bosons. Our findings reveal that weak quasicrystalline lattices can induce a variety of modulated phases, merging the inherent solid pattern with a quasiperiodic decoration induced by the external potential.

Unusual Airway Foreign Bodies in Children: Demographics and Management.

J Indian Assoc Pediatr Surg

August 2024

Department of Pediatric Surgery, St. Johns Medical College and Hospital, Bengaluru, Karnataka, India.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to analyze the demographics and management of unusual airway foreign bodies (UAFBs) in children over a 20-year period.
  • Out of 531 children who underwent bronchoscopic removal, 74 had UAFBs like pen caps, whistles, and glass bangles, with most cases involving children under 5 and presenting symptoms like cough and respiratory distress.
  • The findings indicated that UAFBs in children are relatively common, primarily affecting boys, with the left bronchus being the most frequent site of impaction and bronchoscopic retrieval showing a favorable outcome despite some challenges.
