Background: The XVII Pacific Games was held in Honiara, Solomon Islands in 2023 and was attended by competitors from 24 Pacific nations. The National Referral Hospital (NRH) is the sole tertiary hospital and largest emergency department (ED) in the Solomon Islands, located in the capital city, Honiara, and was the designated referral hospital for the Pacific Games.
Objective: This report documents the lessons learnt from supporting a large international sporting event within a resource-limited health setting, and may help other EDs prepare for similar planned mass gatherings.

Autophagy is a common cellular degradation and recycling process that plays crucial roles in the development, progression, immune regulation, and prognosis of various cancers. However, a systematic assessment of the autophagy-related genes (ATGs) across cancer types is deficient. Here, a transcriptome-based pan-cancer analysis of autophagy with potential implications in prognosis and therapy response was performed.

Thymidylate synthase (TYMS) is a key regulatory enzyme in DNA synthesis. We identified the biological effect and molecular mechanisms of TYMS in colorectal cancer (CRC). We employed western blot and immunohistochemistry for the assessment of TYMS expression in CRC samples.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are multipotent progenitor cells present in adult tissues that are recognized as promising candidates for cell therapy due to their ease of access, straightforward isolation, and capacity for bio-preservation with minimal loss of potency. However, the clinical application of MSCs faces significant challenges, such as donor site morbidity, underscoring the need for alternative sources. Recent studies have suggested that inferior turbinate tissues, which are commonly removed during turbinate surgery, may be a viable donor site for MSCs.

Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) are abundant in colorectal cancer (CRC), correlating with immunosuppression and disease progression. Activation of the stimulator of interferon gene (STING) signaling pathway in TAMs offers a promising approach for CRC therapy. However, current STING agonists face challenges related to tumor specificity and administration routes.
