Creating anatomically-derived, standardized, customizable, and three-dimensional printable head caps for functional neuroimaging. | LitMetric

AI Article Synopsis

Article Abstract

Significance: Consistent and accurate probe placement is a crucial step towards enhancing the reproducibility of longitudinal and group-based functional neuroimaging studies. While the selection of headgear is central to these efforts, there does not currently exist a standardized design that can accommodate diverse probe configurations and experimental procedures.

Aim: We aim to provide the community with an open-source software pipeline for conveniently creating low-cost, 3-D printable neuroimaging head caps with anatomically significant landmarks integrated into the structure of the cap.

Approach: We utilize our advanced 3-D head mesh generation toolbox and 10-20 head landmark calculations to quickly convert a subject's anatomical scan or an atlas into a 3-D printable head cap model. The 3-D modeling environment of the open-source Blender platform permits advanced mesh processing features to customize the cap. The design process is streamlined into a Blender add-on named "NeuroCaptain".

Results: Using the intuitive user interface, we create various head cap models using brain atlases, and share those with the community. The resulting mesh-based head cap designs are readily 3-D printable using off-the-shelf printers and filaments while accurately preserving the head topology and landmarks.

Conclusions: The methods developed in this work result in a widely accessible tool for community members to design, customize and fabricate caps that incorporate anatomically derived landmarks. This not only permits personalized head cap designs to achieve improved accuracy, but also offers an open platform for the community to propose standardizable head caps to facilitate multi-centered data collection and sharing.

Melanoma, a malignant skin tumor, presents significant treatment challenges, particularly in unresectable and metastatic cases. While immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) targeting PD-1/PD-L1 have brought new hope, their efficacy is limited by low response rates and significant immune-mediated adverse events (irAEs). Through multi-omics data analysis, it is discovered that the spatial co-localization of CD73 and PD-L1 in melanoma correlates with improved progression-free survival (PFS), suggesting a synergistic potential of their inhibitors.

Artificial intelligence techniques offer promising avenues for exploring human body features from videos, yet no freely accessible tool has reliably provided holistic and fine-grained behavioral analyses to date. To address this, we developed a machine learning tool based on a two-level approach: a first lower-level processing using computer vision for extracting fine-grained and comprehensive behavioral features such as skeleton or facial points, gaze, and action units; a second level of machine learning classification coupled with explainability providing modularity, to determine which behavioral features are triggered by specific environments. To validate our tool, we filmed 16 participants across six conditions, varying according to the presence of a person ("Pers"), a sound ("Snd"), or silence ("Rest"), and according to emotional levels using self-referential ("Self") and control ("Ctrl") stimuli.

Background And Purpose: Dual energy computed tomography (DECT) is an advanced CT technique which has been shown to improve accuracy in distinguishing between intracranial hemorrhage and calcification, which is often challenging on conventional CT and therefore may warrant repeat imaging in the emergency department (ED) to document stability and exclude enlarging intracranial hemorrhage. We hypothesized that implementation of a DECT head protocol with fully automated post processing in the ED would decrease the need for repeat imaging and therefore reduce overall ED length of stay (LOS).

Materials And Methods: This is a retrospective study comparing ED length of stay over a one-year period before (7/1/2016-6/30/2017) and after (7/1/2018-6/30/2019) implementing a DECT head protocol, for patients scanned for headache, trauma or fall, who were found to have indeterminate intracranial hyperdensities on conventional images, and were subsequently discharged home from the ER (excluding patients who were admitted, taken to the OR, or left against medical advice).

Objective: To determine the effect of the surgical bouffant cap on hearing, sound localization, and speech intelligibility in the operating room (OR).

Background: Covering of the ear during surgical procedures has been promoted to prevent surgical site infection (SSI) from ear pathogens. However, the potential impact of ear covering on hearing in the OR has not been studied.

This study investigates the use of near-infrared fluorescence imaging (NIFI) as an alternative to intraoperative parathyroid hormone (ioPTH) measurement in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHP) due to parathyroid adenoma (PA) with two preoperative imaging examinations in agreement on the position of the altered parathyroid gland. Fifty patients who underwent minimally invasive parathyroidectomy (MIP) from March 2021 to April 2024 were enrolled. MIPs utilised both NIFI and ioPTH, comparing the time to adenoma excision with NIFI against the total surgical time, including ioPTH measurement wait time.
