. Sleepiness assessment tools were mostly developed for detection of an elevated sleepiness level in the condition of sleep deprivation and several medical conditions. However, sleepiness occurs in various other conditions including the transition from wakefulness to sleep during an everyday attempt to get sleep.. We examined whether objective sleepiness indexes can be implicated in detection of fluctuations in sleepiness level during the polysomnographically-monitored attempt to sleep, i.e. in the absence of self-reports on perceived sleepiness level throughout such an attempt.. The polysomnographic signals were recorded in the afternoon throughout 106 90 min napping attempts of 53 university students (28 females). To calculate two objective sleepiness indexes, the electroencephalographic (EEG) spectra were averaged on 30 s epochs of each record, assigned to one of 5 sleep-wake stages, and scored using either the frequency weighting curve for sleepiness substate of wake state or loadings of each frequency on the 2nd principal component of variation in the EEG spectrum (either sleepiness score or PC2 score, respectively).. We showed that statistically significant fluctuations in these two objective sleepiness indexes during epochs assigned to wake stage can be described in terms of the changes in verbally anchored levels of subjective sleepiness assessed by scoring on the 9-step Karolinska Sleepiness Scale.. The results afford new opportunities to elaborate importance of intermediate substates between wake and sleep states for sleep-wake dynamics in healthy individuals and patients with disturbed sleep.

Background: There is a lack of data support and scientific validation of the Exemption Approach policy for responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, in terms of protecting the health of flight crews and meeting the requirements for passenger and cargo transportation in emergencies, in terms of its safety and the circumstances that contribute to pilots' symptoms of jet lag and the risk of fatigue.
Methods: To assess pilots' sleep issues related to jet lag symptoms and fatigue, this study evaluated an example of risk management for flight crews on flights across time zones during the COVID-19 pandemic. To evaluate the crew's sleep status, variations in sleep index changes between before and after the flights, variations in sleepiness levels, and data on sleep indexes recorded by ActiGraph bracelets were collected from 146 crew members before and after flights eastward or westward across time zones.

A total of 3,307 (PIC L 42) sows and 55,160 piglets were used to determine the effects of different farrowing systems on piglet livability and lifetime growth performance. Treatments were assigned to farrowing rooms and consisted of a conventional farrowing system (sows and piglets housed in individual farrowing stalls) or a pre-weaning socialization system (stall dividers removed between farrowing stalls and walkways within 6 to 24 h post-farrowing such that 12 to 32 litters of piglets were co-mingled). A total of 40 farrowing rooms with 80 stalls each were used with 20 rooms per treatment.

Rationale: Knowledge about the clinical importance of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) in severe asthma is limited.
Objectives: To assess whether and to what extent asthma exacerbations affect changes in PROMS over time and asthma-specific PROMs can predict exacerbations in adult patients with severe asthma in usual care.
Methods: Data of 421 patients with severe asthma (62% female; mean age 51.

Primary dysmenorrhea (PD) is associated with decreased performance and reduced quality of life in young adults. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of implementing Arogya Rakshak Panchatantra (ARP), a naturopathic lifestyle practice, among young female adults with PD. This open-label, parallel-arm, randomized controlled trial included 52 young female adults with PD aged between 16 and 25 years.
