Obesity has escalated into a critical global health crisis, tripling in prevalence since the mid-1970s. This increase mirrors the rise in metabolic-associated diseases such as type 2 diabetes (T2D) and its complications, certain cancers, and cardiovascular conditions. While substantial research efforts have enriched our understanding and led to the development of innovative management strategies for these diseases, the suboptimal response rates of existing therapies remain a major obstacle to effectively managing obesity and its associated conditions.

Intraocular pressure (IOP) elevation is the primary risk factor and currently the main treatable factor for progression of glaucomatous optic neuropathy. In addition to direct clinical and living animal in vivo studies, ex vivo perfusion of anterior segments and whole eyes is a key technique for studying conventional outflow function as it is responsible for IOP regulation. We present well-tested experimental details, protocols, considerations, advantages, and limitations of several ex vivo model systems for studying IOP regulation.

  • The study investigates mass mortality in Golden Trevally at an aquarium, identifying gas bubble disease (GBD) as the cause and aiming to prevent future incidents.
  • The researchers examined fish showing GBD symptoms and conducted necropsies, finding gas bubbles in various tissues.
  • Results indicated that structural defects in the water system led to high total dissolved gas levels, emphasizing the need for monitoring and maintaining water quality to protect aquatic species.

Background: The vitreous humor serves as a window into the physiological and pathological processes of the eye, particularly the retina. Diabetic retinopathy (DR), a leading cause of blindness, involves hyperglycemia-induced damage to retinal cells, leading to ischemia and elevated nitric oxide levels, culminating in vascular proliferation. Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RD) results from a break in the neuroretina, triggering ischemia, photoreceptor death, and cellular proliferation.

The liquid biopsy is playing an increasingly more important role in the diagnosis and treatment of retinoblastomas. The possibility of safe and uncomplicated retrieval and examination of aqueous humour from the anterior chamber contributes significantly to the differential diagnosis and to a better understanding of the disease. It helps with the prognosis both in terms of eye-preserving treatment and in estimating the risk of metastatic disease and helps with genetic uncertainties in unilateral disease.
