Background: Inflammation following transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is associated with an increased risk of adverse outcomes. The aim of this study was to compare the inflammatory response between low radial force valves (Acurate neo2, Boston Scientific) and high radial force valves (Evolut R/Pro, Medtronic; SAPIEN Edwards Lifesciences; and Myval, Meril valves).
Methods: We conducted a retrospective study of patients with severe aortic stenosis treated with TAVI between 2021 and 2022. The primary endpoint was the difference in the inflammatory response between low radial force valves and high radial force valves, measured as the difference between post-procedural and pre-procedural high-sensitivity C-reactive protein levels (hsCRP delta).
Results: A total of 114 patients were included, of which 65 patients (57%) received a low radial force valve. The hsCRP delta was lower in the low radial force valve group compared to the high radial force valve group (8.7 [2.1-15.6] mg/L vs. 18.8 mg/dL [6.4-19] mg/L; P=0.003), due to a lower post-implantation hsCRP (8.9 [5.45-19.6] mg/L vs. 15.8 [9.8-27.3] mg/L; P=0.013). The incidence of new left bundle branch block (LBBB) after TAVI was lower in the low radial force valve group compared to the high radial force valve group (11 [17%] vs. 18 [37%]; P=0.020).
Conclusions: Low radial force TAVI prostheses were associated with a lower inflammatory response, and a lower incidence of new LBBB compared to the radial force valve group, suggesting that inflammation may contribute to the increased risk of conduction disturbances.

Purpose: The objective was to use cyclic tensile loading to compare the gap formation at suture site of three different suture materials to repair bovine radial meniscal tears: (1) polyglactin sutures, (2) tough adhesive puncture sealing (TAPS) sutures and (3) ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) sutures.
Methods: Twelve ex vivo bovine knees were dissected to retrieve the menisci. Complete radial tears were performed on 24 menisci, which were then separated into three groups and repaired using either pristine 2-0 polyglactin sutures, TAPS sutures (2-0 polyglactin sutures coated with adhesive chitosan/alginate hydrogels) or 2-0 UHMWPE sutures with a single stitch.

Taenia solium is a parasite and is endemic in the developing countries due to various unhygienic faecal practices. The disseminated form is commoner with the brain being the most common site of affliction. This report is of a young female patient with complaints of an insidious and progressive swelling of the right forearm.

Tire wear particles (TWPs) are generated with every rotation of the tire. However, obtaining TWPs under real driving conditions and revealing key factors affecting TWPs are challenging. In this study, we obtained a TWPs dataset by simulating tire wear process under real driving conditions using a tire wear simulator and custom-designed test conditions.

The modification of Pt surfaces with organic compounds like melamine enhances oxygen reduction reaction activity and catalyst durability. Through first-principles free energy calculations utilizing thermodynamic integration and finite-temperature molecular dynamics, enhanced by machine learning force fields for efficient sampling of nanosecond-scale interfacial water fluctuations and incorporating corrections to accurately reproduce first-principles free energies, we demonstrate that melamine destabilizes OH adsorbates, facilitating their removal and enhancing catalytic activity. Unlike alloys, where OH destabilization is driven by changes in electronic structure and surface strain, melamine disrupts hydrogen bonding between OH and interfacial water.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine if there were differences in the tendon forces needed to cause wrist motion and in the passive range of wrist motion following total wrist replacement (TWR) using a contemporary arthroplasty design.
Methods: Eight fresh frozen cadaver arms were moved through five different wrist motions using a wrist joint simulator before and after the insertion of a TWR. Changes in the peak tendon forces and wrist range of motion were compared.
