Published: September 2024

Background: Patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) could present with a notable nasal deformity with alar base retrusion, which should be considered when planning orthognathic surgery (OGS).

Methods: This retrospective study included 84 patients with Class III malocclusion. Cone beam computed tomographic data were used for the investigation. 42 patients had complete UCLP, and the other 42 did not have a cleft. All the patients underwent preoperative virtual surgical planning. Preoperative and postoperative images were used to measure anteroposterior changes in the bone and soft tissue at the alar bases.

Results: In the UCLP group, varying degrees of alar base discrepancies were observed before surgery. In the piriform region of the cleft side, the bone was retruded in 32 cases, but the soft tissue was thicker in 38 cases, and the mean skin surface was anterior in 28 cases. After surgery, the bone discrepancy was not significantly changed (p = 0.288), however, the skin surface symmetry was improved (p = 0.013). Relating to the bone advancement, the ratio of soft tissue change was smaller on the cleft side than the noncleft side (0.56 ± 0.30 vs. 0.77 ± 0.33, p < 0.001). In the control group, a consistent ratio change was observed on both sides (0.76 ± 0.19 vs. 0.79 ± 0.27, p = 0.544).

Conclusions: This study revealed improved alar base symmetry in patients with UCLP after OGS. The soft tissue change ratios were different across the cleft, which should be considered during treatment planning.

The transcription factors in the ABA Response Element Binding (AREB) protein family were differentially regulated under multiple stress conditions; however, functional analyses of AREB in Oliv. had not been conducted previously. In the present study, the comprehensive identification of the gene family and the function of in response to drought stress in were elucidated.

Objective: To establish a similarity measurement model for patients with dentofacial deformity based on 3D craniofacial features and to validate the similarity results with quantifying subjective expert scoring.

Methods: In the study, 52 cases of patients with skeletal Class Ⅲ malocclusions who underwent bimaxillary surgery and preoperative orthodontic treatment at Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology from January 2020 to December 2022, including 26 males and 26 females, were selected and divided into 2 groups by sex. One patient in each group was randomly selected as a reference sample, and the others were set as test samples.

Objectives: To introduce a novel technique using the buried-guided suture method for suspending the alar crus to correct nostril exposure in East Asians and to investigate its safety and efficacy.

Methods: Patients with ptotic alar crus and nostril exposure at our clinic were enrolled between December 2011 and December 2023. Via an intranasal incision, the excess skin on the inner side of the nostrils was excised.

Background: Facial analysis for orthognathic surgery aims to identify facial features and determine how occlusion should be corrected to achieve facial balance. Several artificial neural networks have been developed to detect facial landmarks; however, no publications have reported the application of neural networks to measure facial proportions specifically for orthognathic surgery planning. Objectives: To develop a computer program that automates facial measurements through photograph capture, as well as to present the development stages of the program and the test results evaluating its effectiveness.
