Ambient fine particulate matter provokes multiple modalities of cell death via perturbation of subcellular structures.

Environ Int

Contamination of chars with dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCB) significantly limits their use and hinders their deployment in the circular bioeconomy, specifically in applications that may lead to dietary exposure. Here, for the first time, we review the levels of contamination of chars produced from pyrolysis and hydrothermal carbonisation (HTC) with dl-PCB congeners. We conduct a detailed and critical examination of the role played by the processing parameters, such as temperature and residence time, and the reaction mechanisms, to detoxify the biomass under an oxygen-free atmosphere during its valorisation.

The corpus callosum (CC) is the largest white matter fiber bundle connecting the two hemispheres, facilitating interhemispheric integration and hemispheric specialization. Neuroimaging studies have identified the CC as a marker for aging and various neuropsychiatric disorders. However, high-resolution imaging and detailed lifespan characterizations of CC morphology and connectivity remain limited.

The triboelectric charging of granular material is a long-standing and poorly understood phenomenon, with numerous scientific and industrial applications ranging from volcanic lightning to pharmaceutical production. The most widely utilised apparatus for the study of such charging is the Faraday cup, however, existing analysis of the resulting measurements is often simplistic and fails to distinguish charging due to particle-particle interactions from charging occurring through other mechanisms. Here, we outline a modular approach for interpreting these measurements, enabling triboelectric phenomena to be explored in greater detail.

Evaporative Morphology Tuning of Conducting Polymer Films Under Controlled Vacuum Conditions.

Adv Sci (Weinh)

December 2024

Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), 77 Cheongam-Ro, Nam-gu, Pohang, 37673, Republic of Korea.

The evaporation of drops on solid surfaces is a ubiquitous natural phenomenon, and their dynamics play a pivotal role in many biological, environmental, and industrial processes. However, the complexity of the underlying mechanisms has largely confined previous studies to liquid drop evaporation under atmospheric conditions. In this study, the first comprehensive investigation of the evaporation dynamics of conducting polymer-containing drops under controlled vacuum environments is presented.
