Identification of therapeutic target genes for age-related hearing loss through systematic genome-wide mendelian randomization of druggable genes.

Exp Gerontol

January 2025

Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Qilu Hospital of Shandong University, Jinan, Shandong, China; NHC Key Laboratory of Otorhinolaryngology, Shandong University, Jinan, Shandong, China. Electronic address:

Background: Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is a common sensory disorder with significant public health implications. However, few effective treatment options are available. Mendelian randomization (MR) has been used to repurpose existing drugs and identify new therapeutic targets.

Introduction: Chronic postsurgical pain (CPSP) represents a widely underdiagnosed and often poorly treated medical problem, affecting 10-50% of all surgical patients, exhibiting neuropathic features in 35-60%. It is hypothesised that surgery-induced tissue damage and the subsequent immune response cause sensory alterations in the early postoperative period, ultimately leading to a chronic neuropathic or nociplastic pain state. The 'Sensory Changes and Immunological parameters in Postsurgical pain' study (SCIP-Pain study) was designed to test this hypothesis and identify sensory alterations and changes in the immunological response that are related to the development of CPSP with neuropathic features.

Introduction: Exposure to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) is associated with a range of poor long-term health outcomes, including multimorbidity and chronic pain. Epidemiological evidence underpins much of this relationship; however, psychophysical testing methods, such as quantitative sensory testing (QST), may provide valuable insights into potential mechanisms. Previous studies have shown inconsistent links between ACEs and QST, but the QST profiles of people with multimorbidity have not been reported.

Characterization of Odorants Causing the Hawthorn Aroma in Cabernet Sauvignon Wine by Gas Chromatography-Olfactometry, Quantitation, Aroma Recombination, Omission, and Addition Studies.

J Agric Food Chem

January 2025

Laboratory of Brewing Microbiology and Applied Enzymology, School of Biotechnology and Key Laboratory of Industrial Biotechnology of Ministry of Education, Jiangnan University, Wuxi 214122, China.

This study aimed to identify the specific odorants contributing to the distinctive hawthorn aroma present in wines, expanding upon previous research on the aroma characteristics of Cabernet Sauvignon wine. By utilization of high-performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography-olfactory-mass spectrometry, 14 odorants showed a positive correlation with hawthorn aroma characteristics. Among these, ethyl isovalerate, ethyl butanoate, myrcene, and α-terpineol demonstrated the highest correlation coefficients.

Mapping Consumer Preference for Vegan and Omnivorous Diets for the Sensory Attributes of Flour Products with Iodine-Fortified Plant-Based Ingredients.

Nutrients

December 2024

Department of Gastronomy Science and Functional Foods, Faculty of Food Science and Nutrition, Poznań University of Life Sciences, Wojska Polskiego 31, 60-624 Poznań, Poland.

Objectives: Flour products with iodine-fortified dried vegetables can be a good source of iodine. However, in addition to iodine stability, the sensory quality of these products is also important. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the effect of adding iodine-fortified dried vegetables to flour products (gnocchi and ciabatta) on their sensory quality and map consumers (vegan/omnivore diets) as potential consumers of fortified flour products with iodine-fortified dried vegetables.
