Ciliopathies are a group of diseases caused by defects in cilia, hair-like organelles that can have many functions ranging from regulating extracellular fluid flow to sensing mechanical or chemical stimuli. Multiciliated cells (MCCs) with motile cilia are found in locations that include the central nervous system, where they are critical for homeostasis. Specifically, ependymal MCCs line the brain ventricles and central canal of the spinal cord, while other specialized MCCs occupy highly vascularized structures known as the choroid plexuses (ChPs) and produce cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Now, a recent study has shown that murine ChP MCCs develop nodal-like cilia. Interestingly, ChP cilia were found to undergo resorption during early postnatal stages in part through axoneme regression, and this phenomenon was mirrored in human postmortem ChP samples. Taken together, these findings reveal important new insights about the ultrastructure of MCCs that comprise the mammalian ChP, and may have ramifications for other MCC populations in health and disease states.

Meiosis, endoreplication, and asynthetic fissions are variations of the canonical cell cycle where either replication or mitotic divisions are muted. Here, we identify a cell cycle variantconserved across organs and mammals, where both replication and mitosis are muted, and that orchestrates the differentiation of post-mitotic progenitors into multiciliated cells (MCCs). MCC progenitors reactivate most of the cell cycle transcriptional program but replace the temporal expression of cyclins E2 and A2 with non-canonical cyclins O and A1.

Their differentiation is marked by the amplification of cilia-nucleating centrioles, driven by a genuine cell-cycle variant, which is characterized by wave-like expression of canonical and non-canonical cyclins such as Cyclin O (CCNO). Patients with CCNO mutations exhibit a subtype of primary ciliary dyskinesia called reduced generation of motile cilia (RGMC).

Background: During coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), people managing multiple chronic conditions (MCCs) experienced barriers to obtaining needed medications. The purposes of this paper are to (i) determine risk factors for difficulty obtaining medications during COVID-19, (ii) document reasons for the difficulty, and (iii) evaluate the impact on later physical and mental health outcomes.
Method: In a randomized controlled trial conducted in 2016-2021, 1969 adult primary care patients were surveyed about physical and mental health both before and during COVID-19.

In this study, biodegradable, porous, lightweight, and high-surface-area microcrystalline cellulose-starch (MCC-S) hybrid aerogels were synthesized via supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO) drying.
