This 10-minute video aims at improving skills for the structural assessment of the interatrial septum using 2-dimensional transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) to increase the ability to diagnose-or rule out-the different types of interatrial communications. Of the five types of lesions, this video focuses on ostium secundum atrial septal defect. This is the first video in our MicroLearning Video Series, designed to help a target audience of sonographers, general cardiologists, general practitioners who want to gain knowledge on fundamental cardiology, and technicians. An atrial septal defect (ASD) is a common congenital heart anomaly that results in irregular blood flow between the systemic and pulmonary circulations due to an opening in the atrial septum. Ostium secondum ASD accounts for a large proportion of these defects and often goes unnoticed during childhood and adolescence. Pulmonary hypertension (PH), affecting a significant number of patients with ostium secondum ASD, is associated with functional limitations, heart failure, and tachyarrhythmias.

One of the major issues encountered in patients undergoing evaluation for Transcatheter mitral valve replacement (TMVR) is the risk of Left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) obstruction. LVOT obstruction is a catastrophic complication of TMVR, the result of displacement of the anterior mitral valve leaflet (AML) toward the interventricular septum. Several strategies to mitigate the risk of LVOT obstruction have been described and include percutaneous laceration of the anterior mitral leaflet (LAMPOON), alcohol septal ablation, trans-atrial leaflet modification (SITRAL) and Balloon Assisted Translocation of Mitral Anterior leaflet to prevent LVOT obstruction (BATMAN).

Background: Few studies have incorporated echocardiography and laboratory data to predict clinical outcomes in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF).

Objectives: This study aimed to use machine learning to find predictors of heart failure (HF) hospitalization and cardiovascular (CV) death in HFpEF.

Methods: From the Chang Gung Research Database in Taiwan, 6,092 HFpEF patients (2,898 derivation, 3,194 validation) identified between 2008 and 2017 were followed until 2019.

Background: We have developed a new hybrid warp-knit fabric for induction of in situ tissue regeneration that has shown appropriate antideterioration properties and expandability in preclinical studies. This study was performed to assess the clinical efficacy and safety of this fabric in the early postoperative period after congenital cardiac surgery.

Methods: The fabric comprises biodegradable (complete degradation period, 2-3 years) and nonbiodegradable yarns coated with cross-linked gelatin.

Incidentally Discovered Anomalous Mitral Chordae at the Time of Mitral Valve Repair.

Ann Thorac Surg Short Rep

September 2024

Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota.

Anomalous supravalvular mitral chordae tendineae that originate from the mitral leaflet(s) and attach to the interatrial septum or dome of the left atrium are a rare congenital anomaly. These supravalvular chordae are often associated with severe mitral regurgitation and surgical experience has included resection of the anomalous chord as part of the repair. We describe an unusual presentation of an incidentally discovered anomalous supravalvular chord at the time of mitral valve repair for degenerative mitral regurgitation related to a flail posterior leaflet.
