Purpose: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) level of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) as a valuable inflammatory cytokine for estimation of the efficacy of adjunctive antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) in stage II-IV periodontitis patients.

Methods: This review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA statements, and registered in PROSPERO (CRD42022321211). An electronic search was conducted for articles comparing the efficacy of aPDT versus scaling and root planing (SRP) published up until June 2023.

Sickle cell disease is one of the most common autosomal recessive genetic disorders with 23% and over 70% of men with this condition, experiencing episodes of ischaemic priapism and stuttering priapism, respectively, with potentially severe consequences. The effective prevention of sickle cell disease induced ischaemic priapism and stuttering priapism requires a multidisciplinary and multimodal approach. A search of the English literature was performed utilising Pubmed® and Google Scholar to identify publications on contemporary and novel treatment options, with their associated treatment outcomes if available, that are utilised to prevent stuttering priapism episodes and hence a fulminant ischaemic priapism.

Excessive glutathione intake contributes to chemotherapy resistance in breast cancer: a propensity score matching analysis.

World J Surg Oncol

December 2024

Department of Breast Surgery, Henan Provincial People's Hospital, Zhengzhou University People's Hospital, No.7 Weiwu Road, Zhengzhou, Henan, 450003, China.

Background: We aim to explore the impact of excessive glutathione (GSH) intake on chemotherapy sensitivity in breast cancer.

Methods: Clinicopathological data were collected from 460 breast cancer patients who underwent adjuvant chemotherapy from January 2016 to December 2019 from Zhengzhou University People's Hospital. The clinicopathological characteristics following GSH treatment were collected and compared with those in Non-GSH group after 1:2 propensity score matching (PSM).

Prognostic value of metabolic tumor volume on [F]FDG PET/CT in addition to the TNM classification system of locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer.

Cancer Imaging

December 2024

Department of Translational Imaging in Oncology, National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT/UCC) Dresden, Medical Faculty and University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus, TUD Dresden University of Technology, Fetscherstraße 74, Dresden, 01307, Germany.

Purpose: Staging of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is commonly based on [F]FDG PET/CT, in particular to exclude distant metastases and guide local therapy approaches like resection and radiotherapy. Although it is hoped that PET/CT will increase the value of primary staging compared to conventional imaging, it is generally limited to the characterization of TNM. The first aim of this study was to evaluate the PET parameter metabolic tumor volume (MTV) above liver background uptake as a prognostic marker in lung cancer.

Background: Postmastectomy radiation therapy (PMRT) can influence the outcome of implant-based breast reconstruction (IBBR). This study aims to investigate the complications and patient-reported outcomes (PROs) following PMRT between direct-to-implant (DTI) and tissue expander-to-implant (TEI) reconstruction.

Methods: The retrospective study included breast cancer patients undergoing IBBR and PMRT.
