The interplay of stochastic and ecological processes that govern the establishment and persistence of host-associated microbial communities is not well understood. Here we illustrate the conceptual and practical advantages of fitting stochastic population dynamics models to multi-species bacterial time series data. We show how the stability properties, fluctuation regimes and persistence probabilities of human vaginal microbial communities can be better understood by explicitly accommodating three sources of variability in ecological stochastic models of multi-species abundances: 1) stochastic biotic and abiotic forces, 2) ecological feedback and 3) sampling error.

This study explored the characteristics of MIAs and examined their prevalence at various intracranial locations in a large international population with multiple IAs, aimed at shedding light on the concept of MIA.
Methods: Data were collected from cohorts of patients in France and Finland with ≥ 2 definite saccular arterial dilatations at intracranial vessel bifurcations.

Antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitides (AAV) are autoimmune inflammatory small-vessel disorders with potentially life-threatening organ manifestations. Recent disease definitions and classification criteria allow distinction between granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA), eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA), and non-granulomatous microscopic polyangiitis (MPA). The discovery of ANCA-autoantibodies directed against proteolytic enzymes of neutrophil granules-has enabled earlier diagnosis of AAV and paved the way to stage-adapted treatments.

Purpose: Germinal matrix hemorrhage/intraventricular hemorrhage (GMH-IVH) affects primarily preterm infants and causes significant morbidity and mortality. Health disparities are a reality for underserved populations, such as those rural patients. As our institution serves a substantial portion of rural patients, we examined mortality rates and rates of permanent cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) diversion in newborns with GMH-IVH.

A great deal of attention is being paid to strategies seeking to uncover the biology of the four-stranded nucleic acid structure G-quadruplex (G4) via their stabilization in cells with G4-specific ligands. The conventional definition of chemical biology implies that a complete assessment of G4 biology can only be achieved by implementing a complementary approach involving destabilization of cellular G4s by ad hoc molecular effectors. We report here on an unprecedented comparison of the cellular consequences of G4 chemical stabilization by pyridostatin (PDS) and destabilization by phenylpyrrolocytosine (PhpC) at both transcriptome- and proteome-wide scales in patient-derived primary human astrocytes.
