We are developing a phase-modulating micro mirror-array spatial light modulator to be used for real holography within the EU-funded project REALHOLO, featuring millions of pixels that can be individually positioned in a piston mode at a large frame rate. We found earlier that an electrostatic comb-drive array offers the best performance for the actuators: sufficient yoke forces for fast switching even at low voltages compatible with the CMOS addressing backplane. In our first design, the well-known electrostatic cross-talk issue had already been much smaller than would have been possible for parallel-plate actuators, but it was still larger than the precision requirements for high-image-quality holography. In this paper, we report on our analysis of the crucial regions for the electrostatic cross-talk and ways to reduce it while observing manufacturing constraints as well as avoiding excessively high field strengths that might lead to electrical breakdown. Finally, we present a solution that, in FEM simulations, reduces the remaining cross-talk to well below the required specification limit. This solution can be manufactured without any additional processing steps and suffers only a very small reduction of the yoke forces.

Silicon nitride is a low-loss photonic integrated circuit (PIC) platform. However, silicon nitride also shows small nonlinear optical properties and is dielectric, which makes the implementation of programmability challenging. Typically, the thermo-optic effect is used for this, but modulators based on this effect are often slow and cross talk-limited.

In this study, we have developed an electrostatically suspended accelerometer (ESA) specifically designed for ground use. To ensure sufficient overload capacity and minimize noise resulting from high suspension voltage, we introduced a proof mass design featuring a hollow, thin-walled cylinder with a thin flange fixed at the center, offering the highest surface-area-to-mass ratio compared to various typical proof mass structures. Preload voltage is directly applied to the proof mass via a golden wire, effectively reducing the maximum supply voltage for suspension.

The emergence of a novel cross-α fibrillar structure, unlike the commonly observed sequence-independent cross-β one, of a 22-residue bacterial virulent amphipathic α-helical peptide of the phenol soluble modulin (PSM) family, PSMα3, with many deleterious effects on human life, has infused uncertainty to the paradigm of the intrinsically polymorphic, multivariate, multiphasic, and cross-sequence-cross-disease entangled protein aggregation landscape and hence on the identity of the therapeutic target. We, here, deconvolute the factors contributing to the genesis and hence the transition of lower to higher order aggregates of PSMα3 in its natural state and three noncanonical designed variants using conventional and enhanced sampling approach-based atomistic simulations. PSMα3 shows structural polymorphism with nominal α-helicity, substantial β-propensity, and dominant random-coil features, irrespective of the extent of aggregation.

Biomolecular condensates are essential for cellular functionality, yet the complex interplay among the diverse molecular interactions that mediate their formation remains poorly understood. Here, using coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations, we address the contribution of cation-π interactions to the stability of condensates formed via liquid-liquid phase separation. We found greater stabilization of up to 80% via cation-π interactions in condensates formed from peptides with higher aromatic residue content or less charge clustering.
