Among the various compounds regarded as emerging contaminants (ECs), pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are of particular concern. Their continuous release into the environment has a negative global impact on human life. This review summarizes the sources, occurrence, persistence, consequences of exposure, and toxicity of PPCPs, and evaluates the various analytical methods used in the identification and quantification of PPCPs in a variety of solid and liquid environmental matrices. The current techniques of choice for the analysis of PPCPs are state-of-the-art liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (LC-MS) or tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS). However, the complexity of the environmental matrices and the trace levels of micropollutants necessitate the use of advanced sample treatments before these instrumental analyses. Solid-phase extraction (SPE) with different sorbents is now the predominant method used for the extraction of PPCPs from environmental samples. This review also addresses the ongoing analytical method challenges, including sample clean-up and matrix effects, focusing on the occurrence, sample preparation, and analytical methods presently available for the determination of environmental residues of PPCPs. Continuous development of innovative analytical methods is essential for overcoming existing limitations and ensuring the consistency and diversity of analytical methods used in investigations of environmental multi-class compounds.

Background: Dementia, a growing health crisis, disproportionally affects persons from racial/ethnic backgrounds and individuals with comorbidities. Latelife change in cognition is complex and nonlinear, as well as differential for these individuals. These individuals are also largely underrepresented in clinical trials.

Background: Prior research shows that caregiving for people living with dementia (PLWD) varies with cultural, institutional, and social structural context, but less is known about the role of context in dementias of different etiologies. We compared experiences of caregiving in frontal-temporal dementia (FTD) versus non-FTD dementias using community-based comparative ethnography. We expected to find differences in caring for people living with FTD (PLWFTD) versus people living with other dementias (PLWOD).

Department of Medical Biochemistry, Faculty of Medicine, Umm Al-Qura University, Makkah 21955, Saudi Arabia.

Aim: Breast cancer (BC), a disease in which abnormal breast cells grow out of control and form tumors, is a prevalent life-threatening disease worldwide. Oxidative stress has been implicated in the development and progression of various cancers, including BC. Assessing lipid peroxidation and overall antioxidant status in BC offers valuable information on disease progression, patient prognosis, and the effectiveness of therapeutic options.

Processing and inspection of high-pressure microfluidics systems: A review.

Biomicrofluidics

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Power Grid Environmental Protection, Wuhan, Hubei 430074, China.

In the field of microfluidics, high-pressure microfluidics technology, which utilizes high driving pressure for microfluidic analysis, is an evolving technology. This technology combines microfluidics and pressurization, where the flow of fluid is controlled by means of high-pressure-driven devices greater than 10 MPa. This paper first reviews the existing high-pressure microfluidics systems and describes their components and applications.
