Theoretical design of molecular superbases has been attracting researchers for more than twenty years. General approaches were developed to make the bases potentially stronger, but less attention was paid to the stability of the predicted structures. Hence, only a small fraction of the theoretical research has led to positive experimental results. Possible stability issues of extremely strong bases are extensively studied in this work using quantum chemical calculations on a high level of theory. Several step-by-step design examples are discussed in detail, and general recommendations are given to avoid the most common stability problems. New potentially stable structures are theoretically studied to demonstrate the future prospects of molecular superbases design.

Millions of tons of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) are produced each year, however only ~30% of PET is currently recycled in the United States. Improvement of PET recycling and upcycling practices is an area of ongoing research. One method for PET upcycling is chemical depolymerization (through hydrolysis or aminolysis) into aromatic monomers and subsequent biodegradation.

Cisplatin-based platinum compounds are important clinical chemotherapeutic agents that participate in most tumor chemotherapy regimens. Through density-functional theory calculations, the formation and stability of the inorganic oxide carrier, the mechanisms of the hydrolysis reaction of the activated platinum compound, and its binding mechanism with DNA bases can be studied. The higher the oxidation state of Pt (II to IV), the more electrons transfer from the magnesia-gold composite material to the platinum compound.

Quantum optical phase, rigged Hilbert spaces and complementarity.

We place Loudon's quantum treatment of optical phase in in its historical context, and outline research that it inspired. We show how it led Pegg and Barnett to their quantum phase formalism, explaining the challenges that they overcame to define phase operators and phase eigenstates rigorously. We show how the formalism essentially constructs an extended rigged Hilbert space that supports strong limits of the phase operators and includes their eigenstates.

Development and psychometric testing of the psychological capital questionnaire for nurses.

BMC Nurs

December 2024

School of Nursing, Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, No. 1166 Liutai Road, Wenjiang District, Chengdu city, Sichuan Province, 611137, China.

Background: Psychological capital (PsyCap) is a positive internal resource for individuals, playing a crucial role in mental health. Evaluating nurses' psychological capital is important for understanding their mental well-being, as they face unique occupational stressors. However, existing PsyCap questionnaires are developed for various other professions such as enterprise employees, teachers, patients, teenagers, and civil servants, making them less suitable for the nursing profession.

The white neutron source driven by an electron accelerator utilizes a pulsed electron beam to bombard a target, producing neutrons through photoneutron reactions. The white neutron source of photoneutron reaction has advantages such as compact structure, low cost, capability of generating ultra-short pulse, and wide applications in the resonance energy region, effectively complementing reactor neutron sources and spallation neutron sources. The development of high-current, high-power electron accelerator-driven white neutron sources is of significant importance for neutron science research and nuclear technology applications.
